2007 Vegoose

Sadly, The Joker, Change100 and I will not be attending Vegoose this year. After going the first two years, I'm unable to go because of a work assignment in Australia. It's funny.... I had to miss Bonnaroo two out of the last three years because I had to cover the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Normally, I have to cover an event at the Bellagio in October but this year, Change100 and I got sent down under. Oh well.

To be honest, I don't think I'm going to miss Vegoose all that much. The lineup is not as strong as it was in previous years. Sure, I'd like to see Rage Against the Machine, but aside from them... there's not much of a draw.

You can always catch the action over at the AT&T Blue Room where they will be streaming live performances on Saturday and Sunday.

Radiohead Conspiracy Playlist

Like Radiohead? Like conspiracy theories? Then check out this link Radiohead: 01 and 10. The Joker tipped us about the article that detailed an intersting theory behind the albums OK Computer and their most recent release In Rainbows.

Phish Vegas 96

Phish first played Las Vegas in 1996, which would be the start of many other epic Las Vegas appearances. The exact date was December 6, 1996 and the boys played at the Aladdin Theatre which concluded a monster 35-date tour. That show has been remastered into a three disc CD that will be released on November 20th. It will be in stores and available at Live Phish.

According to Phish.com, "Vegas 96 is available for PRE-ORDER NOW at Phish Dry Goods. Everyone who pre-orders from Dry Goods will receive 'Road To Vegas,' an exclusive bonus CD of highlights from Phish's Fall 1996 Tour. Featuring more than three hours of music, Vegas 96 captures the spirit of a band at the peak of its powers pulling out all the stops.

In addition to the three-disc Standard Edition containing the entire concert, a Special Limited Edition Vegas 96 Box Set includes a bonus DVD of archival footage from the show and an extensive 40-page bound photo book in deluxe packaging. The extended 'Harpua' encore included on the bonus DVD features a host of special guests onstage including Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde of Primus, multi-instrumentalist John McEuen, yodelers and four Elvis impersonators in a legendary display of Vegas-style sensory overload.

Man, sounds like you gets some good shit. That's why I already put in my pre-order.

New Batch of Music

Martin, Wood & Medeski at Langerado
I'm about to fly to Australia for a work assignment, which means I'll be looking at almost a full day on a plane if you count the round trip flight time. I decided to add some new music to my iPod. I also decided to slim down my library. I had over 4,400 songs and trimmed the list to about 2,400. I also had simply too much music that I never listened to. All the Dead, Galactic, and Phish bootlegs were taking up 50% of my hard drive space. I had to cut down on those shows and I also slashed all the jazz that I had on there.

I created a few new playlists for running and writing background music. Over the last six months, I felt as though I was listening to the same stuff over and over. I had 4,400 songs and sometimes, I could not find anything to listen to.

I've been digging The Duo Tones, which is two acoustic guitar players. I stumbled upon the them by sheer accident. Their Surf Music Unplugged is perfect writing music. Amazing stuff.

I've also been on a Medeski, Martin, and Wood kick including all of their side projects. John Scofield frequently sits in with the Brooklyn-based trio. He cut an album with them after their tour of Japan together. I have been getting into Chris Wood's side project with his brother Oliver aptly called The Wood Brothers. And when The Wood Brothers are on tour, the other two-thirds of MMW, got together and continued to create music. That's where Mago comes in. I've been writing to those guys all week long. Billy Martin is on drums and John Medeski is on keys and organ. Lots of groove-oriented jams with plenty of soul, salsa, and latin influences.

JW mentioned that I'd dig The New Mastersounds. And he was right. British slam-funk with lots of roots in boogaloo. Inspirational stuff to write and run to. I have a feeling that their live shows would be filled with frenetic energy.

I'm still obsessed with Rodrigo y Gabriela's intricate acoustic guitar work. And can't stop listening to Eat a Peach and Goats Head Soup. I have become obsessed with both albums, which were released just around the time of my birth.

Goats Head Soup is lesser known Rolling Stones album that features Angie. That's the overrated song on the album and has plenty of other gems such as 100 Years Ago which contains some heavy Keith Richards "I'm pissed off and jacked up on smack" guitar riffs. Dancing with Mr. D and Star Star never get played on the radio or often get left off of Rolling Stones Greatest Hits albums. It's a shame.

Radiohead -- In Rainbows

Last week, Radiohead released their seventh studio album In Rainbows onto the internet. Stop by their site www.inrainbows.com and you can download it and pay what you wish. I'm a cheap bastard and snagged it for free.

I heard some of the songs on In Rainbows when I caught Radiohead at Bonnaroo in 2006. The majority of them have been played in concert before and have been already floating around the interwebs.

I only listened to it once and will have to hear a few more times before I can trash it for being absolute crap or applaud it for being pure genius.

Of course, the folks over at Rolling Stone did a lackluster "track by track" review. At least it contains a couple of You Tube clips.

Led Zeppelin Coming to iTunes

Led Zeppelin to Make Its Songs Available Digitally is an article I read in this morning's NY Times. After a long time battle between suits and more suits, Led Zeppelin finally cut a deal where they will release their material digitally to music services such as iTunes. Now you can finally buy Houses of the Holy for Christmas.

Mike Gordon in Hawaii

Mike Gordon was in Hawaii last month and he played with Steve Kimock and Billy Kreutzmann from The Grateful Dead. Check out Tropical Jam III which is a review written by Adam Harju and includes several photos.

The trio played a mixture of Dead covers such as Cumberland Blues, US Blues, and The Other One. They played some of Gordon's original material including Foundation, Car Carrier Blues, and Weekly Time. They also covered So Lonely, She Caught The Katy, Bring It On Home, Alphabet Street, No Expectations, and Just Kissed My Baby.

Trey Anastasio Interview

Galactic Fall Tour

The G-men are ready to bring a New Orleans style party to your hometown! They are kicking off their fall tour with a gig in Flagstaff and they boys will be tearing it up this weekend at the House of Blues n Hollyweird.

For the majority of their shows, they will be having Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5), Mr. Lif and Boots Riley (of The Coup) as supporting acts, plus special guest Lifesavas.

Galactic will also be making their first ever appearance on the Conan O'Brien Show, which will be taped in New York City on November 19 on NBC in the afternoon. The show airs at 12:35am.

This was the last show on Phish's fall tour. I caught 19 of the 24 shows on that tour. Angela (the girl I was dating at the time) and I started out with the first show in Vancouver in early September. We left all our contraband in Bellingham and drove over the border. Luckily, we hooked up with some local product before the show.

We caught both shows at the Gorge and camped out there. Then the caravan moved onto Portland, Boise (where she locked her keys in her trunk), two shows at Shoreline, and an amazing night in Chula Vista. We skipped the Irvine show and drove to Mexico instead. Then we moved onto Tuscon, Las Cruces, and drove back in her home state of Texas for two shows. Next up was New Orleans and we were supposed to end it there and drive back to Dallas, but ended up seeing the shows in Alabama and Memphis. She stopped touring and went home to recover. We skipped the four midwest shows and I flew home to NYC where I saw two amazing nights in Long Island and two more shows in Albany to end their tour.

I caught the 10.10.99 show with my buddy Bruce. That was his second Phish show. I had to roll joints because a cop took away my piece the night before. We didn't have floor seats, but they were not bad. The sound was good from our spot.

Farmhouse had been released that year and they played a lot of songs from that album. The first four songs were in heavy rotation that tour. The versions were solid, but I had been spoiled and wanted to hear something else. Dirt and Vultures was a nice change up and the Stash to close the first set was very dark, creepy, and kicked my ass.

The boys threw us a nice curveball with YEM to kick off the second set. Gin was funkified and Trey ripped the shit out of Zero. The encore was a nice and fluffy Contact and then they dropped the hammer with Misty Mountain Hop. They first played in during the 7.20.99 Toronto show that summer. They played two other times on the fall tour. Once with Warren Haynes during the first Shoreline show and another time in Austin. Bruce was excited to hear it and gave the boys his stamp of approval.

It was a very long drive back to New York City after the show ended. I was exhausted after four straight nights of Phish and also beat up from a month long stint of being on the road. It was one of the best adventures of my life and aside from Japan in 2000, it was my favorite leg of Phish tour that I ever embarked upon.

Drove to the show from NYC with my buddy Gil. Only bad thing was getting my pipe confiscated by a cop at the entrance. I had to borrow papers to roll a joint.

We had floor seats right smack in the middle of Pepsi Arena. Amazing sound and one of the best Phish shows I had ever seen. It became an instant classic with me since they played my favorite song Slave to the Traffic Light.

I wanted to hear everything the played. First set felt like a second set. Heavy ass jams and percise playing. Really kicked our ass. PYITE and Wilson was a heavy one-two punch. Guyute, Ghost, and Free was an intense half forty minutes!

2001 and Down with Disease were the highlights of the second set. Fishman went to work on Limb by Limb. Loving Cup to close the set sizzled. Page was a god that night. Mike dropped a few bombs during DWD. Trey tore it up. Again. They were on fire. I was disappointed when the show ended because I wanted them to keep playing. Luck for me, I had a ticket to the show the very next night.

I was up on the lawn with my Japanese friends. I caught the last seven shows and knew what songs were due up in the rotation. We were expecting a couple of heavy hitters like YEM, 2001, and Tweezer. Fee and Glide were pleasant surprises.

During the week leading up to the final show, there were rumors about three sets on the last night of Shoreline. One of the sets would be Phish playing the entire Abbey Road album. Of course, that never happened.

The night before at the first Shoreline show, Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead, came out and played a three song encore with Phish. They busted out El Paso, Chalkdust Torture and West L.A. Fadeaway.

In 1999, Phil Lesh made a special appearance with Phish at Shoreline. Moe rumors whirled around Shakedown and the lots that some of the guys from The Dead would be there on the last night. That never happened.

What did happen was a very solid show and the big surprise was that there was no surprise.

I read a great recap of the first few shows of Phil Lesh's latest tour. Phil Lesh is on the road with a new band featuring Jackie Greene (guitar and vocals), Larry Campbell (guitar), Steve Molitz (from Particle on keys) and John Molo (drums).

I happened to be on tour in 2000. It would be the last shows before they took their hiatus. The Chula Vista show was right after Phoenix and Las Vegas. The boys looked tired in Phoenix after a kick ass weekend in Vegas. Sloppy play ensued. They had two days off and returned refreshed with one of the best shows on that West Coast leg.

I went with my Japanese friends Yuh, Ryuji, and Jun. They were touring with me since Vegas. I scored pharmies in the lot and I got busted during MoMa Dance for smoking a bowl. The security guard was cool and didn't take anything away. He just asked me not to do it again. Of course, I fired up five minutes later.

Second set was solid. I went to the Chula Vista the year before and that set was one of the Top 10 sets of Phish I had ever seen. Something about the energy at Chula Vista that brings the best out of Phish.
