Widespread Panic Sunday Live Blog

12:30 sorry for the lack of updates last night. I could not log into blogger yesterday afternoon. Also, I had a shitty night on fri night cause the girl I took to the show had a meltdown during the second set and I just wanted to enjoy the sat night without distractions.

Today we are celebrating Lissy's birthday. She is driving in from summit county and will likely bring some needed energy to the group.

The story from last night is some car trouble. We ran out of gas on Broadway in Boulder about 100 feet from the gas station. Maybe because of that the car would not start in the lot leaving the show. It was a fun little adventure. What ended up happening is that Nicole left with a friend to go get a car from her parent's house, while the rest of us sat in the lot and drank. About an hour after the lot was completely empty, Aaron cranked the car and it started. Our trip to Denver to see a Michael Jackson cover band was aborted but it was still fun.

I thought the show last night was great. The highlight of the first set no doubt was "life during wartime." It got everyone singing "this aint your party, this aint your disco..." To each other during the song and continued into setbreak as people passed each other in line to food, beer and bathroom.

Second set was a good one too. It was the first time for me to hear Panic do "fairies wear boots" and they killed it. The segues were smooth and the band was tight all night.

We are eating at Foolish Craig's in boulder and will be heading out to Red Rocks about 1:30-2. The show starts at 4pm today. The word is "never miss a sunday show."

1:30 the food is just what the dr. Ordered. There are 2 men in their 40's sitting next to us and we overhear their conversation; they are annoying. One of them is wearing rollerblades at the table. You know the hardest thing about rollerblading? Telling your parents you are gay.

3:45 quite the chaotic scene getting in. Lots of kids looking for tickets, the most I have ever seen outside on a sunday. Its hot. Sarah cupcakes and I are walking around looking for an extra.

4:00 I am in but Sarah Cupcakes and uncle ted are still out looking for a ticket. Cupcakes gets in but Uncle Ted got shut out.

4:05 set 1
Happy
Stir it up (bob marley)
Chainsaw city (I found the denver boulder rob jen bjorn crew. Row 33 schools zone)
Big wooly
Dark day program
Chilly water (gettng drenched. Its a hot day, feels perfect.)
>Bowlegged>chilly
(red rocks goes nuts)
5:05 setbreak

5:40 setbreak seems long, dj harry is playing. Talking with the crew and debatimg what to eat/smoke/drink since some of us have to work tomorrow.

5:55 the setbreak was so long it was a 2 piss setbreak for me. But it was cool- dj harry played a beat and they came out to jam with him.

II: jam w/dj harry>
Contentment blues>
Rock
Worried
(Schools teases My Sharona between songs)
Disco
Conrad (its awesome to get Conrad cause Tyler had to work today. When he left this morning he told us that we could go fuck ourselves if we got a conrad! Fuck yeah.)
Long intro jam> Tie your shoes shoes (the sun has gone down behind the back of red rocks and dropped the temp. A perfect 75 in the shade.)
Riders on the storm (The Doors)
>Fishwater (yeah!)
Cream puff war (marshmallows go everywhere)
End of set 7:05

E: (long encore break)
Already fried
(3 song encore, we only know 2. We are brain dead)
Heaven
(What a Wonderful World post show music)

8:13 we are drinking beers, cooking hotdogs and chicken in the lot while listening to the sick "hubble" by sts9 from wakarusa '08.

8:27 we are eating chicken and hot dogs dancing in the lot to girl talk's new album.

9:31 alright kiddos, I'm driving back to denver. Sunday was definitely my favorite of the 3 shows- everything came together for me today. Great show by panic- download that.

From The DCeiver, by way of Matt Yglesias:
Your instructions are as follows:

1. Take out your iPod (or Zune, I guess...really, who buys a Zune?)
2. Press shuffle songs.
3. Answer the following: a) How many songs before you come to one that would absolutely disqualify you from being President? b) What is that song?
4. Leave your answers.

Four songs in I get "Just a Lil Dude (Who Dat Ovah There)" from RZA featuring Q-Tip. First four lines:

"Bodies in the street, killing over head
Marvel at the sky, as it turn blood red
Peelin' caps back til the white meat show
This is natural, for the little Afro"

I'm guessing lines three and four could be spun into a "Let's Kill Whitey" sort of thing, right Jeremiah Wright?

If that's not enough, song 12 was Ice Cube's "Givin' Up The Nappy Dugout," which should be plenty.

How about yours?

Widespread Panic Friday Red Rocks Live Blog

4:38 We have been to the liquor store and are stocked. We will be heading to the Red Rocks lots shortly.

I have spent the afternoon coordinating with the people in the crew on costumes and Steve and Bjorn have gone up there early to get in line. It is a big deal to get to Red Rocks early with your tarp for your crew to save space. The doors open at 5:30 but people have been lined up all day to get a good spot.

7:00 we had a magical moment in the lot. I was driving seperate from the rest of the crew yet somehow I pulled in and parked directly behinf them. The lot scene in lower south has been mild so far. We are drinking some beers and will go in soon. The rumor is that they are going to start on time this year at 7:30.

7:30 ok so they started at 7. We are bad panic fans because we are not even in yet. Todd and aimee are discussing breakfast. Todd would like to remind everyone a balanced breakfast. I just got offered "a mostly cold pbr" at the entrance where you have to throw away your alcohol. I declined.

7:40 we found the tarp crew. I'm getting beer.

Setlist:

Mike Gordon - Q&A with Rolling Stone

Gordo did a Q&A with Rolling Stone. Check it out.

Here's a bit...
That's what I actually miss the most, going to band practice at Trey's barn and sitting around and talking. It's all this backstage stuff and hanging out with the band type stuff, where we just feel like we're all on a mission together. We had our separate dressing rooms in the end, but we really hung out a lot. We didn't go our own ways. We were a band with a capital "B," I think, or tried to be. For that to go away was just devastating. But then, what happened, a year or so later, I started to think, "I'm gonna push myself to do stuff that I wouldn't have pushed myself to do." Because if there's a Phish album or tour, even if we take six months off, if there's another one on the horizon, it's like, "OK, well I'll do my own little thing, but ultimately Phish is gonna ?" But with that gone, suddenly, I think I was taking bigger bites out of my creative potential. And then, eventually to say, "OK. I'm gonna have my own band," and now, it's really magical, because it's new people. So to have that feeling is great, and then to come back to the Phish thing, to know that we can have that also and that there's no replacing the chemistry of 25 years, no matter what we do.
And Mike even talks about the impending Phish reunion...
We're all healthy, so much healthier than before, and we've grown to this place because of whatever personal stuff we've gone through or we've come to over the last five years, or four years. And that we could potentially do it and that some people will have some excitement about it — that alone is a really inspiring thing. For a rock band, after twenty-five years, to be able to say we could do this again and we're pretty excited about it is awesome.

2009 Phish Reunion?

I have been hearing of lot of talk about a Phish reunion from people who don't even like Phish. You know when stuff from the underground leaks into mainstream, it's gotta be interesting news.

I started a rumor on April 1, 2008 about a Phish Reunion. It was an April fools joke which made a lot of Phisheads laugh and pissed a few hardcore fans off. But for a few days, it was fun to think about the possibility of a Phish reunion, even though deep in my heart I knew that they were done for good.

But then Trey got a message from God... to get the band back together... just like in The Blues Bothers.

Phish reunited for one evening to accept a Jammy, but did not play. Phisheads went nuts again trying to figure out from cryptic text messages if they were going to all take the stage and play Fluffhead again.

By then, more rumors began swirling.

Phish lyricist Tom Marshall dropped a hint.

Trey mentioned something in Rolling Stone hinting about a Phish reunion..

Then word got out about a new Phish album.

And then this week, Page wrote a letter to Phisheads indicating that the four members of Phish were on the cusp of something.

I always wanted to see 200 Phish shows. I have 151 under my belt. Maybe I can see 200 by the end of the decade.

Phish reunion tour in 2009? All signs point to.... yes.

Widespread Panic Red Rocks Preview

This Friday, Saturday (and if I am still alive) Sunday is Panic at Red Rocks. A fun Colorado tradition. I will be live blogging the whole adventure, be sure to stay tuned for that. In the meantime, here is the video from last year...

...and video from 2 years ago when after the Sunday show they blared "Burning Down the House" over the PA and everyone stayed to dance...

I'm pretty excited...tomorrow the crew is going dressed as "day at the beach". Should make for a good time.

Letter From Page; Phish Reunion?

There is a letter from Page up at Phish.com. Check it out.

Here is a snippet:
"The prospect of Phish reuniting is something I consider very seriously, and I think about it a lot. And lastly, as always, there is plenty of misinformation floating around. Try not to focus too much on secondhand sources and random gossip. If there is anything real to announce, it will come from the four of us as a group."
See you on Summer '09 tour....

This Week in Phishtory: Alpine Valley '04

Today and tomorrow 4 years ago I attended my last regular Phish shows...The only times I saw them after this was Coventry.

Justin over at Live Music Blog posted some excerpts and stories from these shows last week...check that out. Of course you can listen to the whole shows at Phishshows.com.

Here are some of my notes from the tour..I know this may be a long read, if you are pressed for time skip down to my story about the cornfield on 6/26, which is one of my greatest concert adventures ever.
The words I used describing my 6/26/04 show was "What a great experience- this is why I go to Phish shows. This is adventure. A little stupid maybe, but I'm still alive and smiling."

Fri 6/25/04
Friday was probably the toughest day of the whole tour so far. We left the Creek about 9:30, but didnt get to meet up with Jeff in Chicago until about 4:30pm because of HORRIBLE traffic (it was supposed to be about a 3 hour drive to Chicago). I parted ways with Pauly in Chicago at a McDonalds and then rushed to Jeff's to shower and hit the road again to get up to Alpine Valley. It was Friday afternoon, 5 pm. More traffic. We are rushing, rushing, rushing. We finally get to Alpine Valley, meet up with Scott, and its 7:45pm. The band is going to take the stage any moment.

Rush, rush, rush. We walk in and the boys are on stage, we find a place in the lawn. The shows at Alpine were kinda like the Greatest Hits of Phish shows. The setlist:

Setlist 6/25/04
Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI, 7:52 PM
Set 1 Julius, Roses Are Free -> AC/DC Bag, Glide, Anything But Me, David Bowie, Wolfman's Brother, Golgi Apparatus

I loved getting to hear the Ween cover Roses Are Free in the first set. The Bowie and Wolfman's were great too. But the real fireworks were at the second set. By the way, after 3 songs we stub down to the pav and we had the best seats I have ever had at a phish show that night, dead center about 12 rows back. The whole second set is just classic phish. The YEM>2001>Yem Vocal jam is just sick and you have to listen to it. I would probably rank that as my favorite segue of the whole tour.

6/26- My most Epic day of the Tour.
I woke up around 11am back in Chicago (yep we drove back to Chicago after the first night) and Jeff called some of his friends that were going to the show he knew from work. I met up with them, we got some groceries, and headed back up to Alpine Valley. I made fast friends with the Chicago crew and we cooked out. It was a beautiful afternoon and I decided to go for a walk in the lot. When I came back, the guys parked next to us, also cooking out and doing the exact same thing as us, were busted for smoking pot by undercover cops and each got a $460 fine! I couldn't believe it. That so could have been me. Luck prevails again.

The lot scene at Alpine can be summed up as this: Hot midwestern girls everywhere, everyone looking for drugs, and no one selling drugs. I was lucky and saw a guy I met in Saratoga and he hooked me up with a mushroom chocolate. This is important because it comes in big time later.

At some point in the lot I met Mike driving around on a golf cart. Cool to shake his hand- my hand is bigger than his, which surprised me that a hand smaller than mine can drop such bombs.

The show was OFF THE HOOK. Here it is:

Setlist 6/26/04
by Carini, Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI, 7:48 PM
Set 1 Access Me*, Scents and Subtle Sounds, Stash**, The Moma Dance, The Divided Sky, Wilson -> Funky Bitch, Character Zero

Set 2 Boogie On Reggae Woman -> Ghost -> Free, Friday -> Piper -> Harry Hood
Encore: Possum

*First time played in concert.
**After Stash, Trey and Mike rearrange their mic stands in jest.

Im gonna go on the record and say that this Set I was my favorite Set I of the tour. Everything was great. I started tripping hard during Stash and by the time Divided Sky came around I was having a spiritual moment with the music. I also loved the Wilson -> Funky Bitch, Character Zero. Great stuff.

At setbreak is when things started getting really crazy. The crowd was HUGE that night, probably the biggest of the tour. The push to the restrooms at setbreak was practically unbearable. It took me about 20 minutes of being packed into a crowd INCHING along to get to the restrooms. Now I gotta tell you this was a scene. There are about 200 people crammed into the restrooms waiting to take a piss, there are guys and girls everywhere outside shouting, and people are pissing anywhere there was a tree, bush or corner. I just waited in line and took this crazy scene in. Remember I am tripping this whole time.

As I walk out of the restroom, security comes over and tries to get people to stop pissing in the trees and on the fence and everywhere else. Some people ran, others ignored them. What can 5 security guards do to 100 people pissing on a fence? Then, crazy shit really went down. I see people getting kicked out or escorted out. More shouting. Then someone turns and pisses on a security guard that was telling him to stop. Then, seizing the moment, 5 or 6 people crash the gate (the show was sold out) and run into the crowd. Most get away but one person got wrestled to the ground by 2 security guards. My head is a mess and its quite a lot to take this whole thing in...finally get back to my seat, and about 5 minutes later the second set starts.

Set 2 was just SICK! Ive never heard a better Boogie On-> Jam. Ghost>Free was great, even Friday was good. Piper. Hood. This show had all the crowd interaction songs in it and the crowd was loud. A great great show.

-------Post Show 6/26/04 Cornfield Story----------

After the show instead of going to my car, I walk to the hotel/resort that is behind Alpine Valley where the Dallas crew was staying and I was going to party & stay with them for the night. I got to the hotel and it is 100% people who had been at the show, and it is a 100% party. People dancing, drinking, running around, you name it, it was there. I find the Dallas crew and hang out for a little bit to let the traffic die down until I thought it would be good to move my car from the main lot back to the hotel.

It was supposed to be about a mile walk to my car from the resort- Doughboy offered to drive me but I said I wanted to walk because 1) it might sober me up a little bit and 2) it would be fun to go though the lots at my last normal Phish show. My reasoning ended up being correct, but I had NO idea what I was in for next.

I start out walking up this hill on a paved road. The road seems to be going away from the lots. I can hear the people partying in the lots and see all the firewords that people are setting off. I'm still kinda tripping and it really was a beautiful scene. Its really dark out, the half moon looked errie with a wisp of cloud around it, the stars are out, and I am completely by myself walking in the night. I decide that maybe the road will take me further out than I want to go, so I decide to take the most direct route to the fireworks, which appears to be just through some woods.

I push through the brush (which was pretty thick) and then all of a sudden I am in a cornfield. Im talking like a Field of Dreams cornfield. It was the trippiest thing ever. I am sorta scared, sort of amazed, sort of thinking that this is just a special moment. There is no one else around in this huge cornfield and the corn stalks are about waist high.

I start making my way though the field, watching the fireworks, and tripping out at the fireflies that would buzz past me every once in a while, making me wonder if im losing it completely or not or if there is really a floating glowstick.

After being in the corn for about 10-15 minutes I see in the distance 2 figures. Of course with my impared vision its dark and I'm not really sure what I see. I'm kinda scared that I might get shot at or arrested for trespassing.

The figures get closer and I call out to them "Do you see me?" they reply relunctantly "Yes...Friend or Foe?"

After a moment of hesitation we figure out that we are all doing the same thing, all spun out phish kids lost in a cornfield trying to get back to our cars. Roddick and Bill from Indiana were my new companions in this adventure, and they had a bottle of Whiskey to keep us warm.

By the time we get through the cornfield, out pants are completely soaked from all the water coming off the corn (I guess the crop had just been watered). Out of the cornfield, into more brush. We can see and hear the lots still, it seems like they are not very far away. Into the brush and trees we go.

Now, imagine you are in brush so thick you can't move through it. And its so dark you can't see 1 foot in front of you. Blair Witch times ten. We move through the woods. Down a hill. Up a hill. More brush. We are in the brush for 30-45 minutes.

Then our moment of Zen. We can see the parking lot. I can actually see my car.

But there is one more thing- a chain link fence with slanted barb wire at the top. The fence was there to keep people out of the cornfield, and now ironically it is keeping us in. We try to climb over but can't. Nothing to do but to walk the fence line until we finally get out of the brush and into the parking lot.

We finally make it around the fence and are at an entrance to the Alpine Valley parking. Celebration. Rejoicing. We all three hug and laugh and look at each other in the light for the first and last time.

After an hour and a half I get in my car, drive (on the road this time) to the resort (which was about a 5 minute drive). The party is still going, actually I think it was just getting started. We drink, we dance, we meet people from all over the country. I passed out on the floor of the Dallas Crew's room at about 5 am. What a night.

Girl Talk: New Album, Pay What You Want?

Yesterday I downloaded the new Girl Talk album and listened to it on a bike ride home from work and then again this morning on the bike ride back to the grind.

I have to say I am somewhat impressed with the curious ability to mash up the odd rhythms of songs like "Paranoid Android" and "15 Step" with Rap and Hip Hop. The mash-up featuring the riff from Metallica's "One" made me grin on the elevator ride to my desk just now. But I can't really tell you if I like this or not...sometimes there are just too many songs in 1 Girl Talk "song" for my taste.

But don't let my opinion stop you from going to the site and downloading it for whatever you think it is worth. Personally, I clicked "I may donate later" which is true- the next time Girl Talk comes to Denver I will be sure to buy a ticket and a beer (or 10) and dance my ass off.

Backstage with My Morning Jacket

You might have seen this video before, but it's well worth watching a second time. The folks at Current gave everyone a "exclusive look at the making of their new album "Evil Urges" and their Texas tour playing new tracks from the record."

Check it out...

Pimpin' Blogs: Orange Sunshine

I was lucky enough to read some Phishy comments over at LiveMusicBlog and find this gem: Orange Sunshine. According to the blog owners Orange Sunshine "was created to share live music. We post mp3s, videos, and photos of live music." In addition to having the coolest background in music blog history, they have great selections of streaming live music. Right now I am listening to the Down with Disease > Mike’s Song > Simple > I am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove - Phish 7.22.97 - Walnut Creek, Raleigh NC. Gotta love it.

This Week in Phishtory: Deer Creek '04

I am feeling a little nostagic about my trip across the country in '04 that included several Phish Shows. Hard to believe its 4 years ago this week. Here are some of my notes from the Phish Deer Creek '04 shows...you can listen to these at http://www.phishows.com/ , and of course own the soundboard through livephish.com.

Wed 6/23/04
The drive to Deer Creek from Indianapolis is only about 30 minutes, so we got up early, got some supplies and headed to the campsites at Deer Creek. The weather was beautiful and perfect once again- highs in about the 70's and it got down in the 50's at night- cool enough to wear a hoodie.

As we were driving into the campsites, I ran into a guy I met at Bonnaroo and he is friends with a band playing an afterparty in the campsites. He directed us to a awesome campsite, close to shakedown street as well as close to the area the band was going to play later. The afternoon before the show Pauly and I had a great time hanging out, meeting people, drinking some beers and enjoying the weather. Chris and Mer from Dallas came to meet us and we all sit in the Lawn.

Setlist 6/23/04
Verizon Wireless Music Center, Noblesville, IN (a.k.a. Deer Creek), 7:43 PM

Set 1: Llama, Bouncing Around the Room, Bathtub Gin, Ya Mar, Pebbles and Marbles, Army of One, Split Open and Melt

Set 2: Halley's Comet -> Crosseyed and Painless -> Slave to the Traffic Light, Nothing -> 46 Days -> Scents and Subtle Sounds -> jam -> Brian and Robert, Limb By Limb, Cavern

Encore: Waste

I thought this was a great show, however looking back it might be my least favorite of the tour. But it had its moments. The Halley's Comet -> Crosseyed and Painless -> Slave to the Traffic Light was awesome. There was a huge glowstick war during Halley's. And I got my Bathtub Gin in the first set, so that was fun. Pauly isnt too fond of Waste as an Encore, so we left the show at the encore and beat everyone going out. We walked straight back to the campsites and the party was already going. The band was playing (they played all night) and there was also a balloon tank next to us. I sold a few bloody mary's and white russians, lit some candles, and watched the balloon suckers stumble forth into the night. It was a beautiful night and I passed out sometime in the early morning.

Thurs 6/24/04
Thursday morning I woke up kinda late around 11am. I picked up the camp a little bit, then set up the bloody mary show on shakedown and played some guitar. I had a great time selling and met a lot of cool people. I even traded a bloody mary for a breakfast a guy next to me was selling- scrambled eggs, sausage, and biscuts and gravy. Sometimes its the little things that make your day. That shit was better than waffle house.

Thurs afternoon we went down to the show a little early and got our seats. Pauly and I met up with Cory from Dallas and some of his crew. We had seats on Mike side kinda behind the soundboard and at this show we probably had the coolest most enthusiastic group of people around us all tour (which is saying a lot!). The show Thurs night was hot. The setlist:

6.24.04 Verizon Wireless Music Center, Deer Creek, IN

Set I: Loving Cup, Cities, Back On The Train, Vultures, My Mind's Got a Mind of its Own, Down With Disease > Rock and Roll

Set II: Tube, Antelope, The Wedge, Timber Ho, Prince Caspian > Simple, Walls of the Cave

Encore: The Squirming Coil

This whole show was amazing start to finish. The Loving Cup opener had everyone singing along. Cities is probably my favorite Phish cover and I had been playing & singing it all afternoon on shakedown. The Down w/Disease>Rock and Roll segue was HUGE.

I went to the bathroom at setbreak...it seemed like time slipped through my hands a little bit and I heard the roar of the crowd while I was still in the lawn and Phish was coming on stage. I started moving toward my seat...and then they opened with Tube, one of Pauly and I's favorties!

Imagine a screaming maniac yelling YES! YES! TUBE! YES! running over people to get down into the pavillion...cause that was me. Antelope was huge also. Marco Esquandolas...OHHHHH to be Prince Caspian with stumps instead of feet...Timber! woa Timber! we've got it simple! cause we've got a band! It was all a big singalong and I loved it.

The party back at the camp was a little more chill than the night before, but EVERYONE was just fukked up. I mean, I had so many weird conversations with people and it was a lot of fun being wasted and talking to wasted people. I even met a woman that makes custom stickers- Including Aqua Teen Hungerforce. She had made little toys of Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad- we had a little show with the action figure toys she had made- I was the voice of meatwad. Maybe you had to be there and all that, but it was hilarious.

New Phish DVD

This is from the Phish...
We're thrilled to announce Phish Walnut Creek, a brand new 2-DVD set, in stores August 5th, and available for pre-order now at Phish Dry Goods.

On July 22, 1997, Phish performed the second show of their U.S. summer tour at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC through a torrent of rain, thunder and lightning. Rather than cancel the gig, the band played on with the music mirroring the peaks in the storm's intensity. Highlights include "Down With Disease" that slowly segues into "Mike's Song" - the first and only time these two classic tunes were ever paired together in such a way-as well as "Taste," complete with near Biblical thunder and lightning display.

Overall the show is remembered as a significant example of Phish's hallmark approach to group improvisation with the performances here characterized by an exceptionally democratic and refined balance of four musical voices. This 2-DVD set features more than 2 1/2 hours of 5-camera footage with 5.1 Dolby Surround or optional stereo sound.

Anyone who pre-orders the DVD from Dry Goods will receive "Phish: Left Nuts," a bonus CD featuring more than 75 minutes of previously unreleased music from Phish's past performances at Walnut Creek, produced specifically for this release.

Strawberry Shortcake's Gone Country!

….real country.

At least for the the Hank Williams, Jr. and Lynyrd Skynyrd show in Jacksonville, FL last Saturday night.

I decided immediately when my Daddy’o told me he got 4 free VIP tickets to the show, that this was going to be QUITE the time and definitely a learning experience.

**I learned……..
….that the last “rock” show Mama berry had been to was either Three Dog Night or Grand Funk Railroad (go ahead Mama berry), so my job was to get her “good and liquored up” because she was “too old” for rock shows.

….my girl Gina definitely deserved to be called Willie Nelson that night for her red, white and blue attire.

(We voted Gina sexier than Willie)

….the best things in life are dangerous: beer, women, and motorcycles…yeah, that dude was definitely at the show.

….that tye-dye rebel flag shirts make me say, “WHAT?!”
"Let's get rowdy!"

It was pretty funny when........
....a drunk woman got carried out by security BEFORE the show started, while the whole coliseum erupted into cheers and applause
.

….these underage guys came and stood in front of our section and took their shirts off and started bumping chests because they were so excited to see Bocephus!

....aforementioned underage guys tried to take my beer.

It fuckin’ rocked….....
….that we had our own bar and dance space in our section! HOLLA!

….that I spotted a cutie with a ponytail who smiled at me….until when I tried to talk to him later on and he dissed me. BOO!

….when Hank Jr. busted out with Run DMC's Walk This Way!

Lynyrd Skynyrd was ….. eh.

By the time they appeared I was too entrenched with my drink and doing the happy-clapper dance, however, it was freakin’ Lynyrd Skynyrd so every ounce of my “good ole boy” tried to come out.

But, probably the most important realization I made that night was….

That I have GOT to invest in some cowboy boots because cutie chicks in cowboy boots are sexy!

**I was lame and didn't charge my camera battery. So, therefore, always charge your camera battery when you're going to sneak it into a show.

(One happy strawberry!)

Coldplay Accused of Plagiarism?

I'm not a fan of Coldplay, but I thought this was a little unsettling...

The song they didn't write? Coldplay are accused of plagiarism by American band (The Independent)

Here's a bit:
In a video posted on the video-sharing website YouTube, Andrew Hoepfner, Creaky Boards' singer and songwriter, claimed that the melody of Coldplay's song, "Viva La Vida", is pinched from a track he wrote last year called, ironically, "The Songs I Didn't Write".

He blamed Chris Martin for the alleged artistic theft, saying that Coldplay's frontman attended a Creaky Boards concert in New York last year. "We were flattered when we thought we saw Chris Martin in the crowd," said Mr Hoepfner. "He seemed pretty into it... Maybe TOO into it?"
And here's the video...

I have been enjoying the music coverage over at Breakfast on Tour. They recently posted some great pics from Wakarusa, and also had a friend go to Bonnaroo and text them. Seems like they have a great sense of humor, especially since they all dressed up as Breakfast at the 2007 Voodoo Music Festival. I approve. Check them out.

Today & Yesterday In Phishtory: 6/17/04 & 6/18/04 Brooklyn Shows

We would be a little remiss here at Coventry without mentioning the 4 year anniversaries of some of the best post-hiatus shows Phish played: Brooklyn.

Here are some of my notes from 4 years ago about the shows:

After resting in Nashville and getting some of the Bonnaroo funk out of my body, clothes and car, I began the drive East through North Carolina. By Thursday afternoon I had made it to NYC and was ready to see some Phish. And Phish, apparently, knew I was coming and was ready to play.

Both the shows Thurs and Fri night were at Keyspan Park, a new minor league ballpark at Coney Island in Brooklyn, on the ocean.

The Thurs show was a great one. The Setlist:
Set I: Song I Heard the Ocean Sing, Dinner and a Movie,The Curtain With, Sample In a Jar, The Moma Dance ->Free, Nothing, Maze, Frankenstein
Set 2: 46 Days ->Possum, The Oh Kee Pah Ceremony ->Suzy Greenberg ->Axilla ->2001 ->Birds of a Feather, Kung, Mike's Song ->I am Hydrogen ->Weekapaug Groove
Encore: Divided Sky

I thought this show was a very strong one. The set I Moma Dance>Free was very funky and very well done. At about Maze it started raining, then at the Setbreak it started raining really hard. I joked that I had brought the rain with me from Bonnaroo, but It wasn't as bad as the Bonnaroo storms & we had an umbrella. I thought the rain influenced the band to play a very high energy and long second set. The lights during 46 days even used the rain to great effect. Set 2 was just a monster. Suzy Greenberg had 2 huge separate jams in it, 2001 was a great one with lots of smoke and noodling from Trey, and the Divided Sky encore got everyone's jaw to drop and there were smiles all around. The boys sounded very practiced and none of the 2003 sloppyness was there.

Yesterday (Friday) we decided to drive Marco (The Element) down to the venue and tailgate it in the Lot. This turned out to be a fantastic idea. I sold a good deal of Bloody Mary's and White Russians from Marco and it was just fun to hang out and talk to all the interesting people that you meet at a Phish show. Last night was distincly different from Thurs night- Last night we had tickets on the floor, and as an added bonus my old friend Kevin Sport and his girlfriend came to the show. It was great to see Kev and again. Phish delivered with another amazing show. The setlist:

Phish 6.18.04, KeySpan Park, Brooklyn, NY
Set I: AC/DC Bag, Camel Walk, Crowd Control, Stash, Cars Trucks Buses, Carini, My Sweet One, Character Zero, Tweezer
Set II: Wilson, Down With Disease, 99 Problems**, Big Pimpin'**, Chalkdust Torture, Harry Hood, Taste
Encore: Bug > Tweezer Reprise
** with Jay-Z.

That's right- Jay-Z came out during the second set and just owned the stage. The energy on the floor was electric. Overall every song was solid, and I can't believe that I saw Jay-Z with Phish! What a life.

Another fun tidbit last night was that I wore my George W. Bush mask and a T-Shirt given to me at Bonnaroo that read "George W. Heart Getting Spun". To complete the joke I made a sign that said "Dubya Heart Phish" on one side, with "Because Mike Drops Bombs!" on the other. I got nothing but good hearted laughs and about 10 people had me pose for pictures with them. It is hard to tell, but I also am fairly certain that Trey, Page, and Mike all read the sign from stage and chuckled.

Let me leave you with my only disappointment: Thursday night on the subway coming back from the show I became smitten with this cutie from Maryland. She had brown hair, the most beautiful blue eyes, this perfect smile and had such a cute hipster/hippie clean phishy girly style. I was smitten. I failed to get her phone number, but I fell in love.

Today Pauly and I are driving to Saratoga in Upstate NY near Albany for 2 more shows. I am shaking my head that I have already seen so much and my trip is still at its beginning. Pauly is a great tour buddy and we seem to move at the same pace. I feel great, I look like ive danced off a few Dallas cheeseburger pounds and I am in good spirits.

In retrospect 4 years later, I love these shows. As many of you probably know, 6/17/04 was released on DVD and some of you may have toked up and danced to it in a movie theater close to your home.

One funny part about the Jay-Z show that I remember was right before Jay-Z came on I was rolling balls (thats a technical term) and trying to buy some water at the concession stand. I was about to get my water when all of a sudden Jay-Z comes out and all of the concession workers went absolute apeshit. "HOLY SHIT THATS JAY-Z!!!" and pretty much every worker at Keyspan park was showing all the Phish kids how to dance.

Phish with Jay-Z

I also really love the 6/18/08 Tweezer Reprise. I still hear it played on Sirius Jam_On 17 every once in a while. I was exhausted at the end of the show and actually had to sit down at the back for a second during this one. Because I was taking a break it made me look at the lights and smoke and think about how awesome my life is...and as a result it is one of those Phish memories burned in my brain.

Stone Temple Pilots Setlist and Review - 6/14/2008 Pearl Theatre, Las Vegas, NV

Stone Temple Pilots - 6/14/2008 Las Vegas, NV:

Set 1: Big Empty, Wicked Garden, Big Bang Baby, Silver Gun Superman, Vasoline, Lounge Fly, Lady Picture Show, Sour Girl, Creep, Crackerman, Plush, Interstate Love Song, Ticket to Ride > Day Tripper, Too Cool Queenie, Coma, Down, Sex Type Thing, Sin

Encore: Dead and Bloated, Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart
One of my good friends, Schecky, used to manage Stone Temple Pilots back in the 1990s. These days he's in the poker industry but he still has connections in music. He hooked up a bunch of us with tickets and a VIP pass, which was good enough to get backstage.

I kinda drank heavily and knocked back a bunch of Peronis. The show was better than average. Schecky saw them play two nights earlier and mentioned that the crowd was really into the show that night and that according to the guys in the band... the felt that it was the best show of this tour.

The highlights were the ten minutes where they played Plush and Interstate Love Song back-to-back. Yeah, those were their two most-popular tunes and had the entire crowd at Pearl rocking.

The crowd was made up of folks my age and older. I guess we were all teenagers or in college when STP hit the scene in the early 1990s. The tickets in our section were priced at $80. I didn't have to pay a cent but man, that's a lot of dough for a band that's led by a wastoid.

Scott Weiland looked like a freak and acted like he was a golden god.

"He's in his Jim Morrison phase," explained Schecky.

He was wasted on something and would mutter random shit in between songs. They did an interesting medley of two Beatles songs when Scott started rambling on stuff about the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. The band started playing Ticket to Ride > Day Tripper before they stopped and jammed out a song about Courtney Love.

Weiland's voice is not as strong as it once was and the sound was mixed to drown that out at times. He's still a rock star with amazing stage presence. I would have loved to have seen them in 1994.

Thanks again to Schecky for the tickets!

Thumbs Up to Un Blog Andalou

Time to pimp another quality music blog.. I'm fairly certain that some fellow PTers (aka Phantasy Tour message board geeks) run the music (and whatever else they feel like posting) blog Un Blog Andalou. Tony Danza-something-er-other I think is his name... It doesn't matter, these guys have been posting some really cool and often rare pieces for your enjoyment. They just posted the video from a few different Panda Bear shows that I've tried to torrent (failure) and/or watch on youtube (not preferred). Their music tastes vary from Ornette Coleman to the Dead Kennedys to Ratatat! Good shit ! Check it out:
