Phish Reunion Rumors: Hampton and Bonnaroo

I got this email from a reader...
You'll just have to trust me on this one - if you really want to know my source I will tell you but it's easier just to trust me ;-) What I know so far is Hampton March 6th, 7th, and 8th and Bonnaroo.
And of course hat tip to the gang at Hidden Track for All Signs Point to Hampton.

I can't wait to quit my job as a poker writer and get back on the train.

Austin City Limits - How We Wish We Were There

Even though The Joker and I are both from the great Lone Star State and have big crushes on Austin, we'll both be missing this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival. Not finding many, but some other folks are giving updates: playlist blog, austin 360 twitters; and of course the live feed.

This is first year I'll be absent since 2004; at first I tried to tell myself the line-up wasn't as strong as years past, but that's simply not the case. For those playing at home, my virtual Friday schedule would be: Vampire Weekend -> Del the Funky Homosapien (leave early to swim and get a close spot for:) -> M. Ward -> Jenny Lewis -> David Byrne -> Antibalas... Saturday: Get there early for Fleet Foxes -> Jose Gonzales -> Dap Kings -> CSS -> Go swim and eat -> MGMT -> Conor Oberst, stay and get close for -> Beck... Sunday is definitely the weakest of the fest: sleep in and eat at Magnolia's -> wonder around -> Gnarls Barkley -> Band of Horses..

"Widespread Financial Panic"

Change 100 pointed out that Widespread Panic is better than Widespread Financial Panic. Obviously.

I am in the financial services industry and I have to say I am freaked out. I can't sleep. I don't know what is going to happen. Our system is broken and no one knows how to fix it. All the kings horses and all the kings men can't put humpty dumpty back together again. I have been busy non-stop the last couple of weeks trying to calm clients and counsel them...and have put music blogging on the back burner.

If you do not understand what is going on, you need to ask someone you trust in your community. Watch the news. Or pick up a paper. Call your parents. Or read Otis. It is good to ask questions and be skeptical. I do not ask that you agree with one side or the other, I ask that you THINK. It seems that not thinking and apathy has gotten us here.

What is happening now is complicated in the details but it is simple in the bottom line: we are all getting fucked over one way or another. I believe that music brings together kindred spirits, and as your brother...as a family member, I urge you to pay attention with me. Often times in my life music has been an escape...sometimes we need to escape...but now we need to pay attention.

Trey at Newport

Jonas sent this link to us... Trey Anastasio At The Newport Folk Festival. You can stream Trey's set from his gig this past summer. You might have heard this already, but give it another listen. The quality of audio is very good. Jonas highly recommends it.

Sergio's White Hot Top 5: Indie Rock Festival No-Nos

Courtesy of my favorite, Current.

It makes for a good chuckle.

Today in Phishtory: 9/21/99 Tuscon, AZ

9/21/99 Pima County Fairgrounds, Tucson, AZ

Set I: Poor Heart, Sample in a Jar, Split Open and Melt, Drowned, I Didn't Know, Back On The Train, Birds of a Feather, Theme from the Bottom, Golgi Apparatus

Set II: Carini, Bug, Strange Design, Vultures, Limb By Limb, Will It Go Round In Circles, Dirt, Antelope

Encore: Reba, Bold as Love
In my notes from Fall Tour 99, I dubbed this show the "beatdown" because after the show a bunch of wookies nearly beat a kid to death in the lot/camp ground for selling bunk acid. In fact, the cops were worried that they'd be an all out brawl so they kicked everyone out of the campground and we had to sleep in Angela's car.

I also met Page before the show. That was the only time we scored backstage access that tour. I'm not saying that Phish played Strange Design because I asked Page to play it... but it's definitely an eerie coincidence. The boys even busted out an even rarer I Didn't Know.

Anyway, several highlights from the show included a second set Carini opener. They also had two sizzling covers of Drowned and Circles and Bold As Love.

I'm always critical of Phish's choice of encore. About 75% of the time, they totally let me down with a weak encore. I always point out to this particular show at the Reba and Bold As Love encores as an example of what could have been.

Weed News: They Do Drugs in Sweden

I was in Sweden once. But I didn't do mushrooms or get to see fields of marijuana plants. I saw lots of hot Swedish chicks. But, what the fuck? I didn't do any drugs in Sweden. I drank a lot but not one narcotic. I missed out.

Here's some random drug news from Sweden...

Today in Phishtory: 9/18/99 Chula Vista, CA

9/18/99 Coors Amphitheatre, Chula Vista, CA

Set I: Tweezer, Roses are Free, Wilson, Maze, Brian and Robert, Tube, Rocky Top

Set II: Boogie On Reggae Woman, Meatstick, Free, Bouncin, Harry Hood, Frankenstein, Cavern

Encore: Contact, Tweezer Reprise
I was at this epic show. It's definitely on the list of the top 10 Phish shows I had ever seen. And that's out of 151. Everything seemed to gel that night. I was in a great head space mentally. Great venue. Amazing tour. The band was on. The people I was with were awesome. The drugs were perfect. All of those factors led me down the path towards one of my favorite shows. That 20+ minute version of Boogie On to open the second set made the show. Listen for yourself...

Some High Quality Nostalgia : 90s Alt Rock Mix

I first came across this mix all backwards, just the straight download and description from the PT message boards. A little backtracking finds that it all originates from the Mishka clothing line blog. Not sure what they make, but it's all beside the point. The blog is filled with some good shit, including the well flowing 90s alt/indie rock mix by Nick Catchdubs & Mr. Ducker filled with some memorable movie lines and songs you may have forgotten about. The original post is here, download link here.

Britney Spears to Play NYE in Las Vegas?

Hmmm... Panic in Denver? My Morning Jacket in NYC? Or how about Britney in Vegas?

There a rumor that Britney Spears will be performing a New Year's Eve show at Pearl at the Palm's Casino in Las Vegas. That show will kick off her world tour.

Well, there's only one place I'd want to see Britney Spears perform in Las Vegas... and that's on the pole at the Spearmint Rhino.

Phish's SNL Ratings Record Broken

File this under the list of things I didn't know until today. Until Tina Fey broke out her dead-on Sarah Palin impression on NBC's Saturday Night Live two nights ago, Phish (as well as another Vice-President) held the series' rating records.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

With a little help from Tina Fey doubling as Sarah Palin and from guest host Michael Phelps, "Saturday Night Live" logged its best season premiere since 2001.

It was also the most-watched "SNL" for any date since December 17, 2002, when former vice president Al Gore was the guest host and jam band Phish was the musical guest.

That night, Phish played Chalkdust Torture and 46 Days. They also appeared in an installement of the long-running skit "Jarrett's Room." After allegedly running over one of Jarrett's friends, Phish agrees to visit his dorm room and hold a jam session, but in the end, it turns out that the kid who got run over mistook Trey for Chuck Norris. Hilarity ensues.

So wishing I could find a video of Al Gore saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, PHISH!" right about now.

Bring Out Your Vote- Dead for Obama 10/13/2008

Dr Pauly previously reported this but a site for the concert has now been confirmed

This has been buzzing around the Internet for the last few days and was first reported on Relix : The surviving members of the Grateful Dead will play in support of Barack Obama on October 13, 2008. Jeff Chimenti and Warren Haynes will be joining them. The Allman Brothers are also on the bill with a 3rd band (an opening act) to be announced. Location is the Bryce Jordan Center in State College Pennsylvania (home of the Penn State Nittany Lions). Ticket prices to be announced.

Information isn't even up on Deadnet yet. State College, PA isn't the most accessible location for many kind folk. Kind of reminds me of when the boys played Oxford Plains Speedway in the middle of Maine back in 1988 (yours truly attended those shows)

More information as it becomes available but you can check out this cool site for some cool photoshops.

A little internet sleuthing indicates another band reunion as the show opener. No not Phish!!! . The rumor circulating is that Levon Helm will reunite with former bandmate Robby Robertson for this gig.

Phish 2009 Spring Tour Rumors?

First of all, this is not confirmed, just a nasty rumor. Interesting, though.

A friend of mine in the music industry sent me this....

Mitch Hedberg: A Funny, Funny Man

So, Mitch Hedberg died a few years ago which undoubtedly helped his comedy career. It's too bad that things work out that way. Sure, he had a comedy central special or two, but never really got the praise or recognition for his unique delivery and style that he truly deserved. My favorite Mitch line:
I saw a wino eating grapes. I was like "Dude, you gotta wait..."

Anyhow, they've released a new album with some unheard material, Do You Believe in Gosh?. Strategic Grill Locations is also a classic must have...

Today in Phishtory: 9/9/00 Albany, NY

Eight years ago, it was a magical night with special guests Tom Marshall and Michael Ray. And I had floor seats with my buddy Gil.
Phish 9/9/00 Pepsi Arena, Albany, New York

Set 1: Possum, My Friend My Friend > Gumbo > Maze, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Roggae, Guyute, Run Like an Antelope*

Set 2: Gotta Jibboo > The Curtain > Sand ^ > Makisupa Policeman^, Cars Trucks Buses^ > Funky Bitch^, Cavern

E: Harry Hood^

*with Tom Marshall uttering "Marco Esquandolas"
^With Michael Ray on trumpet.
I had a rough start to the show. A huge female cop with a mullet at the entrance seized my glass bowl! Man, what a bummer. That would have never happened when the Dead played there back in the days when it was called Knickerbocker Arena. Luckily she didn't take my stash. Alas, I was on a search for rolling papers or borrowing other bowls throughout the show.

Gil and I had floor seats. He was usually my partner in crime for Albany shows and we'd drive up from New York City. I absolutely dug the first set which included all songs that I wanted to hear including a sizzling Possum opener. Followed up by My Friend > Gumbo > Maze sandwich. Tom Marshall came out on stage for Antelope and got to say "Marco Esquandolas!"

Just when I thought the boys couldn't top the first set, they went out and smoked the hell out of the Pepsi Center. New Orleans trumpet player Michael Ray (from the Cosmic Crewe) joined the gang for five songs. Sand was the highlight of the show.

Wish I had more time to write about this epic show... alas, I'm out of time and have to go back to work!

Anyway, listen to the show for yourself...

SET 2: Equinox, One A Day,Hi Key, Jebez> Instantly> GLOgli> Rent
Encore: Empires

I went into this show with low expectations because the show Thurs night was so good. I really enjoyed the second set - the Jebez> Instantly> GLOgli> Rent was very well played. The lights are straight up mothership and look great. The only problem we had last night was the crowd. Lots of young kids (under 21) who can't handle their drugs. Lots of talking. Its funny cause most of us agreed that we actually preferred the panic crowd to the STS9 crowd last night.

Tonight is the big night- everyone in the crew is dressing up, I am wearing a 1 piece vinyl elvis suit, god help me. I am also looking forward to the afterparty with members of the Disco Biscuits. For the morning of a 3 night run I feel very good. But I have paced myself so I can go big tonight.

Widespread Panic A$$$pen 8/29/08

Last Friday morning I woke up in Denver after the craziness that was the DNC and Obama speech to drive up to Aspen, Colorado for the second night of Widespread Panic at the Aspen/Snowmass Jazz Festival. It was a beautiful drive- we drove through Leadville and went over Independence Pass. It seemed like Lissy got a little car sick but I enjoyed the scenery.

After a quick stop in Aspen we headed out to the festival. There were 2 options for parking: the "close" parking was $20, and the parking where you get shuttled to the festival was $10. We opted for he more expensive parking. When we drove in, one attendant at the gate told us to give our money to the guy in the lot. When we drove up to the guy in the lot, he came up to the car and asked "Did you pay that guy up there?" Which of course we responded "Yes." We got a prime parking spot for free. It was pretty sweet, actually, because there were ins and outs to the festival and we could come back between The New Mastersounds and Xavier Rudd to tailgate with Marco (my Honda Element).

I thought that both The New Mastersounds (3pm) and Xavier Rudd (5pm) sounded great before Widespread Panic hit the stage (7pm). I have no complaints for either set, but both bands got lost in the massiveness of the main stage. I love The New Mastersounds but would prefer to see them in a small sweaty club. The early afternoon crowd was the hard core Panic fans who drew the short straw to stake claim for for their crew that would arrive later. It always cracks me up when I see the tarp nation in the hours before Panic shows - 1 or 2 people standing on a 20ft x 12ft tarp and no, you can't stand there.

Panic started promptly at 7. Here is the setlist:

Widespread Panic, Jazz Aspen/Snowmass Festival, 8/29/08
Set 1: From the Cradle > Walk on the Flood, Little Kin > Cant Get High, Airplane > Rock, Visiting Day, Give (58 minutes)

Set 2: Walkin > Ride Me High > Blue Indian, You Should Be Glad > Chilly Water > Drums > Bust It Big > Chilly Water > Mr Soul (73 minutes)
Encore: Dream Song > Going Out West

The first set came off a little flat for most of the crowd. Personal highlights were Can't Get High and Airplane>Rock, but the performances in the first set were the straight ahead playing of the song without much jamming or building. Most in attendance will probably remember the beautiful sunset on a cloud during Give. Check it out, I actually turned around and danced to the sunset instead of the stage:

Set 2 made the first set look like a Governor from Alaska. I loved the second set. It may be my favorite set personally from Panic in 2008. Everything seemed to come together- lots of great playing, the segues were tight, and I was around my best friends and felt great without a care in the world. The jam out of You Should Be Glad> Chilly Water was especially sick.

After the show I set a record for the most people ever in Marco: 9. We did not have far to go- up the road a few minutes to nearby condos in Snowmass- but anytime there are 9 Colorado show kids all piled into a Honda Element it is a hilarious time.

There was a lot of raging going on back at the condos, but the one we shared was a little more chill which was just fine with me. I felt like relaxing and sipping beers rather than staying up all night. Its hard to beat good fun post show conversation, an iPod full of funky tunes and a plush condo. Overall a great time!

----
By the way, I have know this for a while but Jambase can offically report that Panic is playing New Years in Denver at The Pepsi Center, with Yonder Mountain String Band opening Dec 30-31. Check out the details. Book flights. Party with the joker and my crew in Denvegas. Gonna be fun!

I'm not sure how comfortable the chick is interviewing them - but they seem like a couple of dudes I'd chill with - I could not stop laughing as they talked about Oprah, White Castle, blow jobs, Insane Clown Posse, and everything else except their newest album, Attack & Release.
