Chomsky vs Murph - ReGeneration: The Movie



I recently discovered STS9 has been working on a movie/documentary. It features some of the greatest thinkers and journalists of our time including Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Amy Goodman, and yes- I think even Murph talks at some point.

Here is the summary:

The feature-length documentary ReGeneration goes beyond the labels of "Generation X" and "Generation Y." ReGeneration looks at the many issues facing our culture through the eyes of today’s youth and young adults by exploring how we have been shaped by our media, education system, and parenting.

Perspective may vary but the core belief is the same: today’s youth is a mass-consumer, celebrity-infatuated, and entitled "me" generation – leaving many young people with a cynical and apathetic view of the world. Has this apathy in America affected the direction we as a people may be headed? War... global warming... a flawed education system: Are these issues made worse by today's lack of action, and what must we “ReGenerate” to promote a more lasting and sustainable future? Can we ReGenerate the hope that we can change – ourselves and the world?

To explore these ideas, ReGeneration follows people from three separate walks of life, together representing today's generation. Each brings their own unique perspective: An inspired collective of musicians and artists based in Northern California, a group of eight high school students from suburban Minnesota, and a twenty-something family about to welcome the birth of their second child (tomorrow’s generation). No More "Legal" Shrooms In Amsterdam

THE HAGUE (AFP) - "Magic mushrooms" will be banned in the Netherlands from next week after a court ruling Friday, in the latest sign of a hardening stance on recreational drug use by the traditionally liberal Dutch.

The ban will be in place from Monday after the district court in The Hague rejected a petition by a body representing vendors of the hallucinogenic fungi to halt a health ministry ban on their cultivation and sale.

The ruling comes days after authorities ordered dozens of Amsterdam's famous cannabis-selling coffee shops to close and two other municipalities announced they would close down all their cannabis cafes from February.

Ray Charles - Ring of Fire

My buddy G-Money gave me a bunch of DVDs that included the Best of Johnny Cash's TV show. For a couple of years (1969-1971), Johnny Cash had a weekly show on CBS that featured himself and several musical guests. One of my favorite performances on that DVD was a rare gem... Ray Charles absolutely crushing a cover of Ring of Fire. I get chills hearing Ray whisper at the end of the tune.

Phish-uncle Essentials 001: We're Only In It For The Money

Part I: Hi Boys And Girls, I'm Jimmy Carl Black, And I'm The Indian Of The Group

Hello. My name is Julius_Goat. I play poker, write fiction, and listen to music, not always in that order.

First, the Phish thing. Let's get this out of the way so that I am properly vetted. Much as I love the band, as many shows as I've collected and listened to, as familiar as I may be with most of their numbers, I've never been to a live Phish show. My excuse? Hey, look over THERE!

Pauly's been nice enough to let me ramble in this space. It's the first time that I've been added on to a previously existing blog -- a fun, somewhat flattering, experience. It's kind of like entering into a college house, fraternity or otherwise, with an existing history. There's people already here, a fun and funky vibe, it's a little bit messy, and it smells like pachouli oil and old pot fumes.

So, hi. Pleasedtameetcha.

Let's go.


Part 2: Discorporate And Follow Me

I'm going to try to make a signature series here, which I've titled, all spur-of-the-moment, "Phish-uncle Essentials". In this series, I'll ramble, and then (maybe) tie it back to Phish. That's about it.

To explain my terminology, in brief:

Phish-uncle (n) 1. A musical artist or group predating the jam rock bluegrass barbershop jazz quartet Phish, whose motifs, methods, or signature sounds are similar enough to one or more aspects of Phish as to make their influence upon Phish obvious or highly likely 2. A musical artist or group who, though not showing obvious influence upon Phish, are intricate in composition, experimental in execution, and/or improvisational in performance. 3. Anything Julius_Goat wants to write about, if Julius_Goat is honest about it. 4. But he'll try to stay on point. 5. Though he sometimes gets off topic.

essential (adj) superlative indicating that, if you haven't checked out this album, then get with the program already, buckwheat.


Part 3: Jimmy's Little Creatures On Display

Now that we've got that behind us (and I'm just as relieved as you are), here is the musical genius Frank Zappa.

As you've probably already noticed, We're Only In It For The Money sports a rather obvious parody of the most iconic album covers of all time. What might not be clear to you is that it is also better than the famed Sgt. Pepper cover. This isn't subjective, by the way; as the late Bill Hicks said, I can prove this mathematically, using an etch-a-sketch. Much like the album itself, it keeps unfolding as you search it for acid-tongue-in-cheek reference. It's a beautiful pie in the face of the Official Greatest Album Of All Time.


Part 4: Let's Make The Water Turn Black

If you're unfamiliar with the fellow, Zappa was a true iconoclast, both musically -- more on this in a bit -- and socially. Even within the rock scene he doesn't really seem to play ball. A cerebral, technically masterful guitarist with a bent for high-end orchestration and production, Zappa is just as likely -- maybe more so -- to use his gifts to create the technically-proficient equivalent to an atonal fart in church as an art song. It's a proclivity that often leaves him in the novelty rock ghetto, and it's probably why his biggest hit was "Valley Girl" the 1982 goof he did with his daughter, Moon-Unit. I've seen him lumped with Weird Al Yankovich. I've got nothing against Weird Al, heaven forbid, but it's just not right. It's comparing apples and crocodiles.

This platter dropped in 1968, at the height of the hippy drippy love-in that was radiating out (so the story goes) from the porches of Haight Ashbury and spreading peace throughout the country, Frank Zappa went ahead and put out this album, a poison plum chucked at the collective heads, and Heads, of the sixties. The target was all that was fatuous and empty and dark in society, on all sides. It's shock-and-awe satire, tough love minus the love, and poeser hippies (see the monologue at 1:45 of Who Needs The Peace Corps?) and hypocrite squares (Bow Tie Daddy) alike get scorched. Zappa's not tied to ideology; it's phoniness that he loathes.

Part 5: We Are The Other People, You're The Other People Too

OK, so how does all this equal Phish-uncle? Trey and Fish and Mike and Paige are not exactly rabble-rousers. Land this plane, Goat.

It's in the invention, of course. The tonal shifts. The reconition that it's an instrument, whatever 'it' may be. This is a guy who wouldn't be afraid to solo on the vacuum cleaner of destiny. (Remind me sometime to post the video of Zappa at 22 playing a bicycle on the Steve Allen show.) He's willing to hodge-podge his influences in much the same way, and produce out of the cacophony of doo-wop, rock, acid jazz, horrifying yelps, whines, something that lends itself to new discovery with each return trip. Consider, if you will, "Union Station", the unholy product of an Oh Kee Pah Ceremony gone awry, 26 completely unhearable minutes on the backfield of Junta — or completely unhearable for me the first time I came to it, that is. At some point, though, I forgot to skip, and my subconsious allowed itself to notice how the musical ideas take hold, gel and melt back from whence they came. Very neat.

So it is with We're Only In It For The Money. The first track is so unmusical it seems to be making a mockery of the idea of music, just as the cover mocks the idea of album cover, the title mocks the idea of titles. Tracks end with odd little skits, paranoid whispers, inhuman screams. The whole experience is designed to keep you on edge, throw you off your game. After the first time through, I didn't listen to this again for awhile. But the next time, I started hearing it take form. I noticed that there was music all through the madness, and most of it was brilliant. Even that off-putting opening track took on an insane rhythmic logic.

And, finally, I noticed how Zappa, after eviscerating an entire decade, in the later tracks found curmudgeonly veins of hope. It's an answer of sorts. We're all freaks. The key to true Free Love seeing that we're all the Other People. And then getting on with it.

Old Skool STS9


My buddy jonas0tto started a thread on the "purple bored" the other day and it has exploded with a lot of links to old STS9 shows. I have enjoyed listening to the stuff from 2002-2004. I think that 2004 is my favorite era of evolution in the Sound Tribe Sector 9 world. STS9 from 2004 is a totally different band than they are in 2008, much more chill and beautiful than the in your face gangster shit they are pulling now. Back then the had crystals on stage and were heavy into the Mayan calendar. Check out the original thread for a ton of shows, but here are a few shows that I have been enjoying...

What is the Rolling Stones' signature song?

You know how arguments like this get started. You're sitting in a bar, the conversation has lagged a bit, and you need a way to get people talking again. Matters of frivolous debate--about Kevin Costner's worst movie, the best line from Fletch, or the exact moment at which X band sold out--can turn into a full night of discussion.

As it happened, the wife and I were in a 45-minute car line and growing increasingly frustrated with the changes on XM radio since the Sirius merger. [I could probably write another whole post on how the change from X-Country to Outlaw Country has nearly ruined the station for me. That is for another day.]

Last night, a song came on Classic Vinyl that immediately made me think "Rolling Stones."

Now, there are a ton of songs by the Stones I could identify by their opening five notes and even more I could pick out using one lick. To the general public, though, there are fewer songs that stand out as purely Stones. That inspired a conversation with the wife in which we tried to pick out the Rolling Stones' Signature Song--the one song you could play that would make everybody think "Rolling Stones."

I put out a quick internet poll among my friends and there was a little bit of confusion about what I meant. Some people thought I was looking for their favorite. Others thought I was looking for the most popular. At the time, I didn't have a perfect definition other than "the song that everybody thinks of when you say Stones."

I think that definition does the trick, although if you want to take it a little farther down the road, you case use the Wikipedia definition: "the one song (or, in some cases, one of a few songs) that a popular and well-established singer or band is most closely identified with, even if they have had success with a variety of songs." In this case, think "Margartiaville" for Jimmy Buffet, "Tiny Bubbles" for Don Ho, or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for Nirvana.

When I put the Stones question out there, there were five answers more common than the rest. I've pulled various You Tube videos of the five tunes. You choose which one you think says "Stones" to the general public.

My wife and I discussed it for a bit and then I talked about it more with other folks later. Some folks made a pretty strong argument for "Gimme Shelter." I was nearly swayed.

Here's the thing, though. I'm neither a Rolling Stones scholar or even that big a fan. However, I do think I have a pretty good idea of what Joe Sixpack thinks. If there was actually a "right" answer to this question, I think "Start Me Up" would take the gold. I could spend another 500 words explaining why, but I think my wife summed it up best.

She said, "When I hear Start Me Up, I immediately think of Mick Jagger strutting across the stage."

Russ Brown - The Fugitive Peace


One of the good things about poker is that you meet a lot of interesting people at the tables. One of those folks is Russ Brown. We used to play a lot of poker together both online and in Las Vegas. Russ is not just a poker player, he's also a talented musician and songwriter from Minnesota.

In many ways poker and gambling helped influence Russ' latest project called The Fugitive Peace. His latest CD is regarded as... "a potent mixture of 180 proof Folk-Rock, Americana, and Alt-Country that keeps you wistfully between the shot glass and the exit."

November 21st is a special day in the history of the Phish. Ten years ago, Phish rocked the Mothership with their infamous Hampton Comes Alive shows. Everyone still talks about those epics shows even one decade later. However, the boys also played Hampton the year before on the same exact night. The 1997 Hampton run was just as magical and included the first ever performance of Emotional Rescue to open up the first set. The band also embarks on an intense four song second set that features three of my favorite Phish tunes. Set 2 ends with a Rolling Stones cover - fitting since the opened the show with one.

Phish NYC Rehearsals

I can only imagine the endless distractions that could happen up in Vermont with a thousand barefoot children standing outside of The Barn milling about and awaiting for Trey to urinate in their ears.

A Hooker Named Tela

If you are not a frequent reader of Coventry, let me give you some quick background on what I do for a living. I'm a freelance writer specializing in poker, Las Vegas, and gambling. I follow the poker tournament circuit all over the world and spend way too much time in Las Vegas.

My Phishy and poker worlds collided last week when I met a hooker shortly after the conclusion of the World Series of Poker. And she told me that her name was Tela. You can read about our encounter in a piece entitled... Existentialist Conversations with Hookers: Maelstrom at the Hooker Bar.

Here's a bit:
"What's your name?" I asked.

"Tela," she said.

Wow, that's was a peculiar coincidence. Tela was the name of a Phish song and she had never heard of that band before. No shocker there. The only other Tela that I came across was a cat. My ex-girlfriend had a Siamese cat named Tela. (Later that morning, I'd send my ex-girlfriend a text that said, "u named your cat after a vegas hooker." She's a third grade teacher at a parochial school in Dallas and was not exactly thrilled when she received my drunken text.)

I steered the conversation towards economics. I wanted to know how the credit crunch and the collapse of the hyper-risky subprime-mortgage market affected the average Las Vegas working girl.

"It sucks," she said. "Business is bad. No one has money. Shit, I might have to actually get a real job."

Phish at the Roxy - Early Thoughts


Ah, I got Phish Live at the Roxy yesterday. Three shows. 8 CDs. Pure bliss. I listened to it straight through last night. All three shows. I even sat through Bouncin'. Actually, I took a piss then. Just like if it happened at the show. I was actually at all three Roxy shows and back in '93 I kinda dug the song. It just worn thin on me over the years.

Anyway, here are some thoughts on 2/19/93...

I went to college in Atlanta and attended all three of them with a sprained ankle. I busted it during an intramural hoops game against the meathead fraternity next door to us. Anyway, it's been 15 years since that three night run, hard to grasp that concept sometimes. Man, I did a ton of acid at those shows. That was the drug of choice back then. We had tons of shitty ditch weed and lots of speedy Acid.

I could hear my buddy Bob scream out at one point. His brother drove down from Illinois specifically for the shows. He was the catalyst who steered us to the Roxy for the epic three night run.

The Roxy shows were great writing music and I stayed up all night listening to them from start to finish. The 2/19/93 show is the only one that I listened to twice, so I'll sound off on that show.

What stood out the most was Page's quality of playing especially during a Stones cover of Loving Cup which kicked off the three show run. A couple of my friends thought that was a Phish song and I had to let them know that it was indeed a cover. Page was the anchor and glue back then. Trey is Trey and will always be Trey, but there were moments when Page was the glue that held Phish together.

I missed how the boys used to bust out the for bullhorn for Fee.

Moby Dick > Bowie made me smile because I went bonkers when I initially heard the Zeppelin intro to Bowie on that evening 15+ years ago. I was in a heavy Zeppelin phase back then in college. And how could you not lose your shit on a head full of acid when Fishman wanders out to the front of the stage for a vacuum solo? Seriously, that Bowie was packed with lots of gems that make Phish who they are... Simpsons language, plenty of Moby Dick and Manteca teases, even a quick happy birthday to Fishman.

The vocal jam at the end of YEM freaked me out. At one point I thought I heard cats meowing. Page's parents were also at the show and Page dedicated Lawn Boy to them. I gotta say, I don't even remember that. Then again, my mind is foggy and the memories from the Roxy shows have blended into one long Phish show.

Jimmy Herring (back when he was the the ARU) elevated the gang during his sit in for Funky Bitch. And of course, Fishman was back with a vac solo during Love You.

And, I dig the AC/DC Bag encore that they dedicated to a kid they partied with the night before. Trey said that they hadn't played it in a while and I was glad they did. It was that performance which got me hooked on AC/DC Bag and after the shows, I'd go a little mental hunting down cassette bootlegs all over the Emrory campus for any version of AC/DC Bag.

Michael Franti & Spearhead - 11/14/08 Palace Theatre Albany NY

I first became acquainted with Michael Franti's music earlier this year when he was announced as a performer at Mountain Jam IV. I'm sure I had heard several tunes before this but when I sat down to familiarize myself with his music he became one of my must see artists (along with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals).

Franti's Mountain Jam performance didn't disappoint. When he yelled. "I want to see you all Jumpin" the whole side of Hunter Mountain had hands in the air and we were up on our feet. I also had a chance to listen to him speak and perform a few songs acoustically at the Awareness Village before his actual Mountain Jam stage performance. BFF Kim ran into Cappy Franti (Michael's 21 year old graffiti artist son) roaming the grounds, grabbed his hand and licked it stating. "I love your father." Of course, when she told me and her son Zack what she had done. I looked at "nephew" Zack and said "your mother is fucked but I love her' and Zack just shook his 23 year old head.

When BFF Kim suggested we go see Franti and Spearhead when they hit Albany I didn't hesitate to say yes. We had choices of seeing Tea Leaf Green in Woodstock on 11/20/08 and Dark Star Orchestra on Saturday 11/15/2008 at the Palace but opted for a girls night out where we knew we would be on our feet.

We started the night off with Vietnamese food at Van's located on Central Avenue in Albany. We met up with a couple of Kim's former music student's there. I wound up ordering the Noodle soup with Shrimp and we split an order of fried spring rolls. We didn't have enough time to explore the menu but the Noodle Soup was huge and delicious and I added in a bunch of bean sprouts, basil and jalapeno from a platter they placed on the table to liven the dish up.

It was getting close to concert time and after parking we wound up arriving late into the set of the opening hip-hop act the Solillaquists of Sound. I had never heard of the opening act and there weren't many people seated when we took our seats in the loge (lower balcony) of the Palace. I did notice that the drummer played digital drums (which look nothing like a traditional drum kit) with his head, hands and feet and looked at Kim and said: "Does anyone play a real instrument anymore?" That got a chuckle from Kim.

After a long intermission, Cherine Anderson took the stage for the first 3-4 songs bringing a male audience member up to bump and grind near her on one song. She has a great voice and definitely added to the show. Barbados may bring us Rihanna, but Cherine represents Jamaica well.

Finally a barefoot Franti took the stage. I couldn't find an Palace Theatre setlist anywhere but what follows is pretty close:

Opening song Hello Bonjour is one of my favorites and I was up on my feet for at least the first three songs. When he sang 'I want to see you all jumpin!", I obliged (even though my body felt it the next day). What I like about Franti is how he deftly segues from hip-hop/rap with a reggae beat to folkie styled acoustic ballads with dub and techno in the mix. He even did the old Musical Youth song "Pass the Dutchy' but returned it to to its original lyrics of Kutchie. One song lyrically reminded me of U2's Beautiful Day.

As I sat and listened to one of his ballads I was transported back to my days as a CU college student circa 1980-1983 when I was actively protesting the sale of Coors beer on campus and the Nuclear Arsenal at Rocky Flats. Franti's message is a message of social activism and when he says "people like you and me" you realize he just may be the type of dude you can sit down and have a latte with, who is unfettered by celebrity and as his lyric goes. "Says what he means and means what he says".

The house was on his feet in a celebratory mood on the song Barack Obama. I only felt a little bit bad for any McCain fans in the house. There was only one loud piercing short female scream when he asked if there were many McCain fans in the house but the house roared when he asked 'How 'bout Obama?

Kim was hoping we'd run into Franti since he is pretty accessible to his fans he even came out into the audience post show. She loves his dreads and always cries "I love dreads, how did I marry a bald man". She always jokes she'd run off with him in a heartbeat. When I remind her shes married she states "I'd tell Michael (her husband's name) to go find some 20-something as a trade. Me, I'm not into the whole rock star thing, even though I have a perverse fascination with Bret Michaels. I mean I've sat about three feet away from Sully Erna in the Foxwoods poker room but I don't want to jump his bones (at least not when I'm playing poker)

From the few reviews I found about the Albany Spearhead show, this was one of the most high energy shows and he and the band gave it their all in the 2.5 hour set. I'd go see him again in a heartbeat. The only thing missing was the Flower dude

Weed News: The War on Pot = War on Young People

It's an transcript of a sobering lecture which mentions that 3 out of 4 marijuana arrests happen to people under 30 years old.

Here's a bit:
The war on pot smokers is really a war on you.

According to a 2005 study commissioned by the NORML Foundation, 74 percent of all Americans busted for pot are under age 30, and 1 out of 4 are age 18 or younger. That's nearly a quarter of a million teenagers arrested for marijuana violations each year. To put this bluntly, we now have an entire generation that has been alienated to believe that the police and their civic leaders are instruments of their oppression rather than their protection.

The Flaming Lips - Christmas on Mars (2008)

Well it only took The Flaming Lips seven years to complete Christmas on Mars, no biggie - it can't be that great can it? For those who haven't heard, Wayne Coyne got his friends together and made a movie about the first Christmas on a Martian colony. Who knows, but I'm sure the music is kick ass. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to any of the screenings Wayne had this summer - I'm sure it's best taken in with a friendly crowd and chemicals. That all being said, attention significant others, Moms, Dads and Santa: this is a great stocking stuffer.

A drunken Jersey City councilman was arrested for urinating on a crowd of concertgoers from the balcony of a Washington nightclub, police and club sources said Saturday.

Councilman Steven Lipski was caught relieving himself onto several revelers at the 9:30 Club during a concert by a Grateful Dead tribute band Friday night, club sources said.

"He was very drunk," the source said, noting that it wasn't the first time Lipski had caused a ruckus at the popular concert venue.

Say what you will about cover and tribute bands, but this show was well worth the $7 cover charge. They were remarkably tight and even busted out the trampolines and vacuum - good cheese. Strawberry Shortcake drove down from Ocala and made it an even bigger ginger party with her and Broseph in the mix. Perhaps the most interesting part of the night was the drive home. We caught a ride with some friends - one of which had picked up two girls from the bar and was giving them a ride home. I don't think they were phishheads - they were young twenty something budding hipsters, but the clean, grad school type. One was black, not Barack Obama burnt siena either, darkness. She proceeded to tell us - while crammed into the back of a Pathfinder sandwiched between her white friend and two white guys - that she "really likes the vanilla," but most recently "had been tasting the cinnamon." I wish I had gotten a pic of her, but it's probably best I didn't.

Van Morrison & Astral Weeks Interview


I'm back in LA. I flew into Burbank last night and as we drove over the hills, we passed the Hollywood Bowl. The marquee advertised two shows from Van Morrison this weekend where he'll be playing the entire Astral Weeks album. Those shows will be recorded for a DVD titled "Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl."

Here's a bit...
“Astral Weeks” songs were written over a period of time -– some early 1966 -- and evolved musically. They are timeless works that were from another sort of place -- not what is at all obvious. They are poetry and mythical musings channeled from my imagination.

The songs are poetic stories, so the meaning is the same as always -- timeless and unchanging. The songs are works of fiction that will inherently have a different meaning for different people. People take from it whatever their disposition to take from it is. It is like Tolkien’s “Hobbit” -- the hobbit is what it is. I doubt he would change what the stories [are] just because time went by.

“Astral Weeks” are little poetic stories I made up and set to music. The album is about song craft for me -- making things up and making them fit to a tune I have arranged. The songs were somewhat channeled works -- that is why I called it “Astral Weeks.” As my songwriting has gone on I tend to do the same channeling, so it’s sort of like “Astral Decades,” I guess.

I am about the arrangements and the layers of depth in the music. So, no, I do not see it any differently than it is -- it just is whatever it is.

Deerhoof et al. @ Crowbar, Tampa, FL


A crowd of 100+ filled a comfy Crowbar to see Deerhoof play a lively set late Sunday night. On tour supporting their new album Offend Maggie, the veteran, genre-defying San Francisco quartet invoke thoughts of the Pixies gargling with Frank Zappa. Deerhoof can’t quite craft a song like either of the Franks, but they make up for it with a unique style, polished and tight; all the while manipulating tempo and the downbeat against their psychedelic pop offerings. Not to mention employing #11 on the list of things Stuff White People Like – Asian Girls – in the form of Satomi Matsuzaki as their bass player and lead singer. Another trait setting Deerhoof apart is their tasteful use of improvisation, both within song and during song transitions that kept the set fluid throughout the night.

Experimental Dental School is a Portland, Oregon based duo consisting of the precious and powerful Shoko Horikawa on drums and vocals and Jesse Hall on guitar and vocals. Their sound was endearing and energetic, even strangely reminiscent of a stripped down Fugazi or Primus, but something about Jesse Hall’s delivery did not make me a believer.


Fertile Crescent opened with a short set, just tolerable on its cuteness. They are 2/3 of the band Flying which was scheduled to open, but transportation issues forced a change.

Electron Covers Phish

One of our readers, Dustin, sent me an email about Electron covering a couple of Phish songs on 10/30. He wrote... Electron (Marc Brownstein, Aron Magner, Joe Russo, Tommy Hamilton) played a Phish cover segment for most of the second set at Highline Ballroom in New York.
