NY 77: The Coolest Year in Hell
I was a lil kid growing up in the Bronx in the late 1970s and barely remember much except the blackout and the fact every time I heard a police siren, I assumed the cops were chasing the Son of Sam serial killer.
NY 77 is a documentary about New York City in 1977, during the bankrupt city's lowest moment -- riddled with organized crime, police corruption, fires, serial killers, and one insane blackout that spurred riots and widespread looting.
On the cultural front, 1977 was a magical era because NYC had become the crossroads of different musical genres. 1977 marked the peak of disco and Studio 54 hedonism. Waaaay uptown in the Bronx, rap/hip hop slowly emerged and took root, meanwhile the graffiti scene was everywhere with kids bombing and tagging up subway cars. And downtown, punk exploded on the Lower East Side with CBGB's becoming the focal point of the scene's main hub.
