Monday Morning Key Bumps: Feel Good Hit of the Summer

Love the opening lyrics to this Queens of the Stone Age song. Never really dug QotSA, but this is a catchy song and reminds me of the summer/fall tour 2000. We used to play this song at least five times a day when we were on tour.

Crank it up. It's Monday, y'all...

G-Money Picks: Grateful Dead Egypt 1978

G-Money (@777GMoney) tipped me off to this video. It's from the Grateful Dead's special DVD Rocking the Cradle that covered their infamous shows at the pyramids in Egypt in 1978.

G-Money recommends: "Skip to Ollin Arageed (at 53:35). So cool to watch Jerry play this with the Bedouins."

Rocking the Cradle Playlist:
Bertha, Good Lovin', Row Jimmy, New New Minglewood Blues, Candyman, Looks Like Rain, Deal, Ollin Arageed, Fire On The Mountain, Iko Iko, I Need A Miracle, It's All Over Now, Truckin'

Dope Stories: Ep. 4 - CRACK 101

Dope Stories is officially on iTunes. Subscribe to my new podcast using this link:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/dope-stories/id821749885
We added our fourth episode on Thursday. This is the episode that everyone is talking about. Mainly because it's about crack. Yeah, crack. Shane reveals some startling, yet in depth details in his love/hate relationship with crack.

The show started out normal. Sort of. Shane bought a $20 scratch off ticket before we recorded the show in our studio, which actually also doubles as my office. Anyway, the first main segment of the show is about my chronic insomnia and what I do to help fight it (I avoid sleeping pills, but self-medicate instead using indicas and concentrates). The show took a quick turn into a full-blown discussion of crack cocaine. Consider this an introductory course into the crack world with Shane as your professor. He shares his experiences with the crack scene in NYC and touches on numerous crack-related topics like heightened paranoia and pipes. Along the way, I also grilled him about cooking crack and other curious aspects of the freebase realm. The last segment of the show is dedicated to George Clinton. We talked briefly about Funkadelic's origins and my theory on why George Clinton is an alien.

Today in Phishtory: Mango Song and Gateway Drugs

Phish released Picture of Nectar 22 years ago today. Sweet Jesus, time flies. In college, my stoner friends debated for endless hours if the actual image on the CD was Saddam Hussein (it's the former owner of Nectar's).

In 1992, I lived in Atlanta in a gigantic southern-style mansion of a fraternity house. We usually blasted music on the front porch all the time. That Spring, a couple of musician friends who were the first Phisheads I knew, played Picture of Nectar nonstop. No one in my core group of friends had an actual Phish bootleg yet. We had tons of Grateful Dead tapes, but the only Phish in the house included all three studio albums. So the first wave of Phisheads wore out those CDs.

My favorite Phish song in 1992? The Mango Song.

Yes, the Mango Song. Consider it my gateway drug to Phish. I identified myself as a Deadhead in 1992, but Phish didn't resonate with me as much as it did with other friends. Phish was a slow burn. Although I had seen almost a dozen shows, it would be another year before I bought my first Phish CD (Rift).

22 years later... I never listen to studio Phish. I mean, I hardly ever listen to as much Phish as some of my friends. I like to save it all for the live show experience. So when I hear an overplayed song, it kicks my ass because I have not heard it in a very long time and it feels fresh and new. Makes it feel living in the moment with that song significantly more special. Sort of like abstaining from masturbation until you actually have sex.

I was feeling a little nostalgic this morning and I wanted to play Picture of Nectar. I couldn't find it anywhere in my apartment in LA. All of my CDs are in storage (in a milk crate, sitting on a stack of other milk crates, in the far corner of my childhood bedroom back in NYC where I grew up). I did the next best thing... found it on YouTube. So here's a 6+ minute walk down memory lane.

I love gateway drugs.

Dope Stories: Ep. 2 - Philip Seymour Hoffman, Heroin Chic, Andy Wood, and James Brown

If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm co-hosting a new podcast with my pal Shane. It's called DOPE STORIES and we're trying to promote a rational discussion about drugs.

The accidental death of Philip Seymour Hoffman by a heroin overdose was the main subject of second episode, with heroin addiction as the looming theme of the show. We played a clip from one of my favorite scenes (the "uncool" phone call) from Almost Famous. Shane discussed what it was like living in NYC in the 1990s at the height of the heroin chic years. I shared a couple of OD stories from the 90s ranging from the infamous ice cube H-train story, how Pearl Jam was formed in the wake the OD of Andy Wood (Mother Love Bone), and the inevitable tragedy of Layne Staley. We ended the show discussing James Brown's P.S.A. to the black community with his song King Heroin.

This is the "setlist" for the second episode...

Introducing... The Dope Stories Podcast

Hey kids. I'm Pauly. You might remember me from such podcasts as Coventry's Wook Patrol, Unolker's type II cast, Tao of Pokerati, and Everything Is Bettable.

Well... I'm co-hosting a new podcast called Dope Stories.

My pal Shaniac (poker pro from NYC who lives in LA) approached me at the end of last summer. He had envisioned a new podcast idea, which came to him after a psychedelic adventure (for more info, read Shaniac's take on it.... Dope Stories... I Got A Few). At the same time Shaniac had this epic "moment of clarity", I was on Phish tour and engaging in my own mind-bending adventures. He said I was the perfect person to help him bring his vision to a reality. A podcast about drugs? Sign me up! I jumped on board. Shane tapped his pal DJ Trent to help us produce the podcast. Several months later... it's here.

We launched Dope Stories on Bob Marley's Birthday to commemorate our first episode.

Website: www.dopestories.com
Twitter: @DopeStories
Libsyn: dopestories.libsyn.com
Sound Cloud: soundcloud.com/DopeStories
iTunes: COMING SOON!

Our tagline for Dope Stories is... "a rational discussion about drugs and drug use." Dope Stories will be weekly podcast (new episodes every Thursday). Along the way, I'll tell a few stories about the craziness of being on the road and following the Grateful Dead and Phish.

The first episode features a segment on the origins of the Chemdawg strain, which has something to do with Dead summer tour in 1991.

If I had to construct a "setlist" for the first episode of Dope Stories, it might look something like this:

** FYI... iTunes coming soon. Give us another week to get all that sorted out. In the meantime, we're on both Soundcloud and Libsyn.

Bookmark our website: www.dopestories.com and follow us on Twitter @DopeStories.

Stay tuned for a special episode about Philip Seymour Hoffman that will be available early next week, plus we'll also post our third episode next Thursday with subsequent episodes to follow every Thursday.
