Monday Morning Key Bumps: James Brown and the JB's

It's Monday morning. Time to crank it up.

I'm sticking with James Brown and the JB's. Yesterday, G-Money recommended a little funky stuff (James Brown's Funky People) and I can't get these heavy funk hooks out of my head.

G-Money Picks: James Brown's Funky People

It's Sunday. Time for another installment of G-Money Picks. Basically, I ask G-Money (@777GMoney) for a music recommendation and I listen. He never steers me wrong.

Today, G-Money suggested James Brown's Funky People Part 3...

For more info on the JB's (backing band for James Brown), here's the JB's wiki entry. The original members of the JB's included Bootsy Collins and his brother.

For more G-Money picks, check out... Allman Brothers - Brothers and Sisters, Little Feat (1976 Winterland), Slave and Ohio Funk Scene, and Grateful Dead - Egypt 1978.

PONPONPON, WTF?

I'm way to sober for this one.

My friend Dana (a kick-ass banjo player from London) clued me in on this wondrous masterpiece by Japanese pop star Kyary Pamyu Pamyu...

I need more mushrooms.

Monday Morning Key Bumps: Flashlight by Parliament

Get down. Get dirty. Get funky.

Here's a popular track from Parliament. According to Shaniac, "Flashlight is kinda part of the post-Funkadelic Parliament disco wave."

You've heard Flashlight sampled and re-mixed in hundreds of songs.

G-Money Picks: Allman Brothers - Brothers and Sisters

G-Money (@777GMoney) speaks... we listen. In the March Madness edition of G-Money Picks, we're going back, way back, with the Allman Brothers Band. Tough period for them because they lost two band members to tragic accidents. Brothers and Sisters was recorded in late 1972 and released in early 1973. It was the first album without Duane Allman, who had died in a motorcycle accident in October 1971 (rumored that he had a collision with a peach truck). This album included bass player Berry Oakley before he passed away from a motorcycle accident in November 1972. Eire coincidence, Oakley's wreck occurred a few blocks from the intersection where Duane crashed.

Brothers and Sisters has several classic Allman tunes like Ramblin' Man, Jessica, and Southbound. The opening track is my favorite... Wasted Words.

Monday Morning Key Bumps: JUMP AROUND - St. Patrick's Day

Whenever I hear this song, I want to pound whiskey and get into a fight.

Yes. I went there.

But it's also Monday and we're all dragging ass. It's time to wake up by any means necessary. Since it's the 17th of March, what's more fitting than House of Pain?

Happy St. Patrick's Day.

I went to the Phil & Phriends shows at the Warfield in 1999 when Phil Lesh invited Tey & Page to play with him, Kimock, and John Molo. Donna Jean sat in for a few songs that run. Magical shows.

Monday Morning Key Bumps: 50 Cent

Sometimes, when I'm stricken with a case of the "Mondays", I turn to the great poet known as 50 Cent to bring me out of the doldrums.

Ah, good old 50. This song reminds me living in Las Vegas in 2005-06 and spending too much time in places like Cheetah, OG, and the Rhino and have existentialist conversations with stripper...

By the way, if you dig 50 Cent, check out the latest episode of Dope Stories -- Ep. 006 Tripping in the House I Live In. We devoted a segment to a pair of documentaries on 50 Cent that I watched.

G-Money Picks: Little Feat - Winterland, SF - 1976 Valentine's Day

G-Money (@777GMoney) suggested some Little Feat to kick back with on Sunday. He actually gave me this CD last summer. Little Feat from 2/14/1976 live show at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco.

"Lowell George is still into it," explained G-Money. "He's killing it at that show. It's actually better than Waiting for Columbus."

You should recognize some of these songs...

Punk House Record Shop

My pal Mitchell is one of the many Phisheads from across the pond in Europe.  He has a new project that I want to bring to your attention...

Punk House Record Shop

Mitchell is a former punk rocker from the early 80s and lead singer of the DC10'S. Talk about being at the right time and the right place. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, punk exploded in Great Britain and Mitchell and his mates from Swansea in South Wales carved out their own little niche scene.

Punk House Records is a special label dedicated  to release the original demo tapes of bands from the burgeoning punk scene in Swansea from 1978 to 1985. Those bands included Autonomes, Lost Boys, Tunnel Runners, Venom and the Dodos, who were re-named The Urge.

As Mitchell explained, "My marketing slogan would be 'Never Mind The Music' i.e. these records aren't for listening to - they are artifacts, little works of art to collect and treasure."

I always wished I could have experienced the British punk scene at its peak in the late 70s. Mitchell's label will give you a glimpse into that vibrant past.

G-Money Picks: 70s Ohio Funk (Slave)

G-Money (@777GMoney) tipped me off to Finding the Funk documentary (look for it on Palladia or VH1-Classics). G-Money grew up in Ohio, which was a hub for funk in the early 70s, especially the city of Dayton, which spawned funk monsters like The Ohio Players and Slave. Oh, and I almost forgot Bootsy Collins who was born in Cincy, but was a prominent player in the southern Ohio funk scene.

Here's one of my favorite tracks from the era from Slave. The bass solo (around 4:20) itself is something that can make a lady quiver in her boots, if you know what I mean...

Dope Stories: Ep. 5 - The Oxy Years

We finally reached The Oxy Years portion of the Dope Stories podcast.

Last week, my co-host revealed his flirtations with crack over the last 15 years. I was inspired by his brutal, raw honesty and decided it was time for me to discuss my ongoing battle with prescription opiates.

Introducing episode five... The Oxy Years.

Here's the "setlist"...
