2001 Mix

I made a special 2001 Mix to celebrate 4:20 Day.

Over the years, I made a bunch of mixes for my friends where I compiled some of my favorite versions of Phish performing 2001. It's great driving music and you can listen to like 7 different version of 2001 in one sitting and not get bored with the song once.

Anyway, this edition has a little bit of everything and spread it out from 1993 to 2004. I avoided picking versions from the same year and arranged them in chronological order to you can sense the evolution of 2001 over the years.

1993 Tinley Park, IL... Phish first played 2001 during the 1993 summer tour. This was the only 16th time played. It's a quick and solid version and they don't deviate much.

1995 Charlotte, NC... The boys started to open up a bit. I just liked how Phish sounded in the later part of 1995 and wanted to include one. This version might be the poorest sound quality of the bunch.

1996 Clifford Ball... I missed these shows and always regretted it since then. I used to listen to this version on a bootleg cassette tape that I wore out to death. You can really start to hear Mike stepping it up and pushing 2001 to a new level.

1997 New York City... Another epic New Year's Eve show at Madison Square Garden as Phish ended the Year of the Funk. Fishman's playing stands out on this version and Trey dropped a lot of loops. It includes the countdown just before the ball drops...

1998 Providence, RI... Phish was sizzling hot during their Island Tour. Trey was on another planet but I loved Page's playing on this sophisticated version.

1999 Albany, NY... I saw this show at the Pepsi Arena and had floor seats. The place went nuts during the spacey intro to this monstrous version clocking in at over twenty minutes. Mike was cookin' up some sick shit. Turn out the lights, crank it up, and prepare to blast off.

2000 Fukuoka, Japan... I was shrooming my balls off at this show. I had been waiting all of the Japan tour to see 2001 and wet myself when Phish busted it out at a weird and tiny venue in Fukuoka, Japan. The boys went out on the deep end that night and played some spooky stuff in a mind-melting second set. The Fukuoka show is in my Top 10 show all time and definitely among my favorite versions of 2001.

2003 Shoreline, CA... This is one of two post-hiatus versions of 2001 that I picked. I was at this show and it seemed like the boys rushed it in order to play Down with Disease.

2004 Great Woods, MA... I was there. It was the last great technically sounding Phish show. The Camden and Coventry shows were nostalgic but at times sloppy and not up to snuff for obvious emotional reasons. Anyway, the last night at Great Woods stood out from the rest of their final run of shows. It also featured the final version of 2001. This is one of my favorites because it's so fuckin' mellow and intense. It's not the notes that they played that mattered that night... it's what they didn't play. A fitting send off.

Listen to the 1993 version again after the final one. Quite an evolution, eh?

Thanks to Phishows.com for helping me find all those versions of 2001.

i love all the versions of 2001, but I especially love the 2000 Fukuoka, Japan version. Trey's guitar in a few of the big 2001 notes is on the edge of feedback but he steers it back in...great stuff.

i also noticed how much a difference Fishman makes in each of these. He is the one that really sets the tone with the opening drum beats...

good work, pauly!
