The Joker's Posters: Radiohead, Houston 2001

Radiohead 2001 by Uncle Charlie 12x28

As you know, Radiohead is one of my favorite bands and this is one of my favorite posters. It is from the Houston show in 2001 (tour opener) but I also went to see them at Red Rocks 2 days later so for me it is a poster from both shows. Here are the setlists:

June 18, 2001, Cynthia Woods Mitchel Pavillion, Houston TX
National Anthem, Morning Bell, Lucky, My Iron Lung, Knives Out, Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box, Bones, Exit Music (For a Film), No Surprises, Dollars and Cents, Karma Police, I Might Be Wrong, Pyramid Song, Paranoid Android, Idioteque, Everything In Its Right Place
E1: You And Whose Army?, Street Spirit (Fade Out), Climbing Up The Walls, How To Disappear
E2: Talk Show Host, The Bends

June 20, 2001 Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver CO
National Anthem, Morning Bell, Lucky, Karma Police, Exit Music, Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box, Airbag, Permanent Daylight, No Surprises, Dollars and Cents, Fake Plastic Trees, I Might Be Wrong, Pyramid Song, Paranoid Android, Idioteque, Everything In Its Right Place
E1: Bones, Street Spirit, You And Whose Army?, How To Disappear
E2: Talk Show Host, My Iron Lung

For all of you out there who have been lucky enough to get tickets through the Radiohead web site for the 2008 tour: You will not be disappointed. You lucky bastards.

I lucked out and got 4 tickets in the "pit" for the Houston show through W.A.S.T.E. It was fucking amazing. I had seen Radiohead 4 times before in the late '90s but nothing compared to this experience. 6/18/01 Radiohead is a top 5 all time concert for me, EVER. I am saying that almost 7 years later and that is saying a lot.
But it makes sense- I was on the rail in the pit for the tour opener. I was just blown away.

Those of you that have seen Radiohead know what I am talking about, and those of you that are going to see them this summer for the first time- get ready for a ride. There was so much energy coming from Thom and Johnny. That night I got a man crush on Ed- he is just fucking cool. I remember almost every song from this show...the excitement of the bassline for "The National Anthem" opener...the red lights washing over us during "Lucky"...the tension/release of "My Iron Lung"...the quiet beauty and stillness of 20,000 people during "Exit Music"..."Karma Police"> "I Might Be Wrong"> "Pyramid Song"> "Paranoid Android"> "Idioteque"> "Everything In Its Right Place"> end of set one ::head explodes::

After the Houston show we stayed with some friends in town and then drove back to Dallas. I got on a plane to Denver and met up with my friend Jeff. We saw Radiohead at Red Rocks on Wednesday night and then saw Widespread Panic that Friday and Saturday. As a sidenote, it was quite interesting to see a band as tight as Radiohead play just a few days before seeing a band as loose as Panic. Different worlds.

Radiohead at Red Rocks was an equally amazing experience. Everyone should get to see their favorite band at Red Rocks, need I explain? For you setlist nerds out there (I am one of them) you can compare the 2 nights and see that the setlists are similar but different. If you know the songs well you can see the flow of the songs in the set and placement of similar album/eras of songs. At Red Rocks I got to hear "Permanent Daylight" which was a big treat for me.

I like the art on this poster. Sometimes when I look at this poster I get annoyed that it does not have the year on it. I have to think about which year it was- but I also kind of like it that way. Radiohead has been one of my favorite bands to listen to and see live for over 10 years and I hope it continues for many years to come. Maybe it is appropriate the year is not on the poster after all.

This poster was bought from the artist at some street fair in Dallas in the summer of 2001. It was custom framed in 2002 (along with Bumbershoot) as a gift from Mom.
