Phish Coral Sky DVD Review
How lucky am I to be manning Coventry's west coast headquarters while Dr. Pauly is off on fall tour, especially when things like a brand-new copy of Phish's Coral Sky DVD land in our mailbox? Needing to recover from the debacle that was Game 4 of the ALCS, I popped it in and along with some of California's finest, it did well to soothe my Yankee blues.
I saw my first Phish show in downstate Illinois six days after Phish played West Palm Beach's Coral Sky Amphitheater in the fall of 1996. This is the band I fell in love with at the very moment I fell in love with them. I'm pretty sure I wore some really tragic red Doc Martens, a pair of tapered Gap jeans and a disintegrating flannel shirt to the show. Thankfully I wasn't the only fashion disaster on tour in '96 as Mike Gordon had yet to let go of the pale-wash jeans and Page donned a striped button-up straight out of the Dr. Pauly "summer rotation." I'd missed seeing the Fishman goggles, though. Points for them.
The highlight of the two-DVD set is their sizzling second-set rendition of Crosseyed & Painless, coming only two days after its Halloween 1996 debut. Don't know what Trey was channelling with his weird gay dancing during the front half of the song, but whatever it was inspired some scrumptious licks. They gave way to a turn at the drums for Trey, leaving Mike and Page to lead a space-trance Type II jam against not one, but three percussionists (Karl Perazzo of Santana guests throughout the show). For anyone who misses the 20-minute odysseys of Phish 1.0, this track is a must-listen.
Crosseyed led into this dirty dirty Antelope. Check it out below.
