Also Sprach Zarathustra: 2001, Elvis, Stanley Kubrick, and the Phish

Back in the early 1970s when Elvis was headlining Vegas, he opened up his shows with "2001" blasting over the soundsystem before rushing onstage in his infamous one-piece jumpsuit and kicking off the show with CC Rider.

And of course, here's the opening sequence to Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey...

And I can't leave without tossing a little Phish in there circa the Island Tour in 1998...

Just as a heads up the version of 2001 that Phish covers is not the version from the Kubrick film but in fact the Deodata version of Also Sprach Zarathustra from the 1972 LP Prelude.

The band has acknowledged as much in various interviews over the years. The real kicker is that almost the entire song is used in the last Peter Sellers movie Being There from the moment he steps out of his safe abode where he has served 'the Old Man' his whole life into the wild streets of New York City.

At the end of this sequence Peter Sellers character Chauncey (the) Gardener runs into a gang of street kids and relays a message. One of the youths is played by an equally recognizable figure in the improvisational music scene: Oteil Burbridge.
