Jerry Christmas - Happy New Weir

Yes its cliche for you ole heads out there. My old beau and touring partner from the 1980's, Rob just emailed me those exact Xmas greetings from Sunny Ventura, California and it made me smile.

I'd also like to apologize for my lack of posts. When the good Dr Pauly added me to the team I was full of wonderful ideas. Life has a way of interfering, however and I joined at a bad time of the year for work and free time. All good stuff for the most part, except for the Poker Tilt which is the subject of my other blog.

I have added some new music for me to my collection and will be giving it a listen and hopefully completing some reviews. Recent purchases include:

Bob Marley and the Wailers - LEGEND: The Best of

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City Music Hall

Patty Scialfa (Mrs Boss) Play It As It Lays

Mark Knopfler and Emmy Lou Harris - All the Road Running

Robert Plant and Alison Kraus - Raising Sand

Grateful Dead - Dicks Picks Volume 19 (Fairgrounds Arena, Oklahoma City, OK 10/19/1973)

I listened to most of Dicks Picks 19 on my trip up and down the Northway last nite. Here are the set lists:

CD One
1. Promised Land
2. Sugaree
3. Mexicali Blues
4. Tennessee Jed
5. Looks Like Rain
6. Don't Ease Me In
7. Jack Straw
8. They Love Each Other
9. El Paso
10. Row Jimmy

CD Two
1. Playing In The Band
2. China Cat Sunflower
3. I Know You Rider
4. Me and My Uncle
5. Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo
6. Big River

CD Three .
1. Dark Star
2. Mind Left Body Jam
3. Morning Dew
4. Sugar Magnolia
5. Eyes of the World
6. Stella Blue
7. Johnny B. Goode

I just love the Country/bluegrass vibe of the first set. I could do without the Row Jimmy. For some reason I heard that song way to many times at way to many shows and its just not one of my favorites. Looks Like Rain is a favorite but kind of out of place in the middle of the mix. After a great Playing in the band the band segues into China/Rider which is always one of my favorite two song combos. I just Never get tired of the trippy/funky China into the more traditional I know you Rider. Set III has a very interesting spin on Dark Star.

I was thirteen years old and on my first family trip to Disney World when this concert was played. It would be a good 11 years before I actually saw my first Dead Concert at the Syracuse Carrier Dome on October 20th 1984. The 1973 line-up of the band was Billy as the solo drummer and the Godchaux's in the mix. Sadly, I never saw PigPen or the Godchaux's with the band.

As I drove up the Northway to my live poker game, listening to Bobby sing Chuck Berry's Promised Land I invisioned myself on a plane to Vegas. It got my MoJo working. Personally, I think some of the Bands best stuff was from the early 1970's and enjoy going back in time exploring the band with a leaner sound. I never get tired of Eyes of the World and although not one of the strongest or longest Eyes jams Ive heard its definitely worth listening too.

As with any Grateful Dead show it takes many listens to appreciate the sound, style and explorations the Band takes on any individual song or the interplay of one song into another. And Yes Virginia, There is nothing like a Grateful Dead show!
