Mehchella? 2011 Coachella Lineup Announced

Hipsters were eagerly awaiting the annoucement for weeks for the 2011 Coachella lineup. I dunno and maybe it's me, but this year's line up seems... meh. I mean, in the past there's always been the hot indie band du jour that everyone wants to see (this year it'll be Mumford and Sons), along with a few more "mainstream" or "throwback" acts (like previously Prince and Leonard Cohen). I guess for aging hipsters, The Strokes fits that bill as both a mainstream and throwback act. I dunno if Duran Duran is too obscure enough to get hipster cred.

Here's the lineup that I cut and paste from the press release...

What I'm saying is that although I live in Los Angeles, I'm not willing to make the trek out to Indio on April 15th to see this year's Coachella festival because there's not enough fire power in the lineup to justify me spending the hefty ticket price to hang out in the sweltering desert for a three days with humorless hipsters and uber-chatty LA douchebags. Besides, after the shakedown from security entering the polo grounds for Phish's Festival 8, I really don't have any desire to go back and have more weed taken from me.

For those of you who love Coachella or will be going this year, I hope I'm totally wrong and you have a kick ass time. Definitely check out Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears...they became a new favorite of mine over the last few months.

Update: Thanks to Phil for sharing a mix of some of his favorite bands performing at Coachella this year. You can listen here: Coachella Mix.

I figured you would since you're our indie band guru. Which makes me wonder why I did the post and not you?

What are five bands that you suggest would be fun to see?

Go see Gord Downie. The best front man nobody's ever heard of, from the best band nobody's every heard of (The Tragically Hip). Unless you're Canadian that is since they are by far the most popular band in the country.

Here's an 8tracks mix that I just threw together of some of the better bands.

I pretty much cream for Animal Collective anytime they play. There's lots of fun danceable indie like Cut Copy, CSS and Delorean. And cute girlz like Glasser, Sleigh Bells and Warpaint. This line up is stacked. I like this approach to a fest: pack it with rising stars rather than forking out $$$$$ for expensive asshats like The Eagles and Phish.

MCD... Didn't know he was from the Tragically Hip. Definitely worth seeing.

Phil... Thanks for sharing the mix! Downloading it now and hoping to discover a few new gems.

Duran Duran is way throwback like to my college days 1978-1983. I only think two or three of the original members are still in it. Simon and Nick, the other Taylors moved on. But they are on my IPOD.

Lauryn Hill emerging from "retirement" I see. cee lo green will rock it (check out his Fuck You video - which was done on Glee by I think Gwnyeth Paltrow) as will Damian Marley and Naz.

Looks like a SXSW lineup lots of up comers. And great if your into discovering new music and looking to be surprised.

Many of these bands have some great albums, but so often indie rock bands don't translate live, especially in a hot ass festival setting.. Dunno, I guess my point is that it isnt much different (Thom Yorke the exception) from last years or any other fest.. Arcade Fire are great live.. Cee Lo is a great entertainer and will probably have a great band backing him.. Our favorite vietnamese-american is playing..
