Bowlive II - Soulive at the Brooklyn Bowl

Soulive: Eric Krasno, Alan Evans and Neal Evans return to the Brooklyn Bowl for their second funk-filled residency in two years. This year, musicians as diverse as John Scofield (jazz), to Questlove (hip-hop) to Oteil Burbridge (rock and roll) will be participating. Expect more guest appearances as members of the Allman Brothers Band (of which Oteil is a part) will be in NYC for their residency at the Beacon Theatre and Furthur will be in town with shows at Radio City Music Hall and the Best Buy Theatre.

Tickets are $15 a night or a ten day pass can be had for $125. My friend Meredith attended about half the shows last year and wrote about them extensively over on her Views Skewed Blog.

Radiohead Is Fucking With Us

What does this mean? Rampant speculation on music blogs and message boards that the 8 tracks released by Radiohead as The King Of Limbs is not the entire album. Hopeful thinking? Or is Radiohead up to something? How many branches does this tree have?

About An Artist Growing Old

So H-Double was posting the other day about Daniel Johnston . . .

Let me back up. H-Double was posting the other day. Can we all agree that this alone is worthy of a round of applause? (H-Double's blog went dark before I even got started, but I read him for years before I started writing here or on my blog, and I'd have to say that his posts were a partial influence when I decided to start in the first place. Anyway, if you never have, go check him out, including his archives -- he's one of the old school greats, and he walks among us again.)

But I was talking about Daniel Johnston, the disturbed young man/songwriting genius who has spent his life on the fringe of the music scene, inspiring some, pitied by others. He was the subject of the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston.

I'll be the first to admit that Johnston probably isn't going to hit everybody the same. Technically he can be amateurish, even childish. His voice is a sort of adenoidal quaver. But he has something about him, something true and utterly compelling

Here's my favorite Johnston tune, simultaneously one of the most uplifting and saddest, one of the simplest and most complex songs I know of.

Double Dip: Ride Captain Ride

Page tears it up during a cover of one-hit wonder Blues Image's Ride Captain Ride. As much as I dig Phish's version circa 1998, I stumbled across another cover that Blood Sweat & Tears recorded in 1976. Man, oh man! Not only did the BST's version include horns, but there's a killer solo from keyboardist Larry Willis. And yes, BST's lead singer, David Clayton Thomas, was the original hipster with a scruffy beard, graphic t-shirt, and a brown leisure suit.

So here's Blood Sweat and Tears covering Ride Captain Ride...

And now Phish's version of Ride Captain Ride...

Dana Immanuel - Sidekick

What's better than a British chick with a banjo? My friend Dana, from London, recently posted new video (shot by my colleague Alexander during a work assignment in France) that's a part of a series called "Hotel Sessions." Amazing work on both ends.

Life before Gaga

Long before Lady Gaga's embryonic entrance to the 2011 Grammy's, she was just another NYU college student tooting blow on the lower east side of NYC.

She started the Stefani Germanotta Band in 2005, later dissolving it to focus on neo-burlesque dancing, nailing "cute rocker boys", and pounding whiskey, among other interests.

Props to Dr Pauly for giving me the idea. I stayed up way past my bed time to capture this from the comforts of my living room. So far It hasnt been pulled down by the peacock's overlords.

Mike appeared with his regular touring band which includes Scott Murawski (Max Creek) guitar, drummer Todd Isler (Assembly of Dust), keyboardist Tom Cleary (UVM music faculty and Mike's alma mater), and percussionist Craig Myers (RubbleBucket) to promote his latest release Moss and his March Spring tour (many dates already sold out).

Scott blogged about his experience leading up to the performance here.

Phish gets some French press

Every month, the editor of French magazine Poker 52 publishes excerpts of my travel/poker blog. Usually, the content is poker related, as you would imagine. But for the February issue, my beloved editor Jérôme (who's also the publisher of the soon to be released French translation of DrPauly's Lost Vegas) went positively bonkers by picking an article I wrote about... Phish.

I don't know if this is the first time Phish gets the attention of the French press. Probably not. They toured France a few times in the late nineties, first by opening for Santana and then later coming back on their own. But I'm almost 100% positive this is the very first time a poker-themed magazine (in any country) devotes four pages to a jam band... And a band that almost no one listens to in France, nontheless. Hey, maybe this will get Phish a few new fans in the French poker world, who knows ? In the last few months, I got some poker players and media people interested in the band by endlessly playing live shows on my laptop in the press area of various poker tournaments in Europe.

The article in itself won't be of any interest to any serious Phan... Just a basic rundown of the band and why I dig their music, and a detailed account of all of the troubles I went trough to reach NYC during the last MSG run, with that blizzard in the North-East of the US and all the cancelled planes that ensued.

Click below to enlarge (note : I didn't pick the illustrations myself) :

My ultimate goal is to publish a long article about Phish in the mainstream French music press. There is so much to write about the music, the people behind, the scene, the spirit, etc. I know it will happen... It would help if Phish finally decides to come back to Europe for a few shows !

Omega One

"Within this clattering conflict of an industry ant nest, DJs are either going to play their own trumpet at maximum volume and vibrato, fighting for air space above the bustling tarmac, or they're going to be humble and fulfill their craft out of a sense of empassioned duty, and not because it marks them out. Omega One, NY veteran and graf writer, is one of the latter breed.

Omega One's tracks have a sense of thick depth and a loping fluidity that make you feel like you are taken through sci-fi thriller vistas of angst and steady momentum. He is brilliant at supplying just enough complexity to bind you into the rhythmic weave of the track, while allowing enough time and space for the effects, scratches, dialogue samples, and melodic embellishments to breathe as part of a natural whole. He's also adept at assembling compositions whose drums and melodic lines mesh into a satisfying flow, such as might otherwise be provided by an MC, with the result that many of the tracks here present a formidable rejoinder to anyone still unconvinced that hip-hop instrumentals are a coherent and complete musical form in their own right."

Last night I listened to a couple of hours worth the music from Omega One, and there was not one track that I did not enjoy. Be sure to grab this upload of downtempo, instrumental tracks from the albums, "The Lo-Fi Chronicles", and "Postcards from The Third Rock".

Weed Trumps the Church?

Top 100 people were surveyed... "Name something that gets passed around."

And yes, one contestant on The Family Feud actually said: "A joint." True story. Look at the video and see for yourself.

Thanks to my bro for pointing out this video. Although Steve Harvey played it off like a pro, I would have loved to have seen what the original host, Richard Dawson, would have said.

MIX:The Leaked SBD Tracks Project

"A while back I thought it could be cool to take all Shapiro's From The Archives broadcasts, nix all the talking parts and tracks that have already been released on SBD, and make a playlist from the rest of the "exclusive" tracks that can't be found elsewhere. Then I started finding a bunch of other miscellaneous SBD leaks, like that "Past Summer Compilation" thing last year, and a link i found with a bunch of random SBD tracks that surfaced in 2009, from various years.

I thought it would be great to not only have all of those tracks in one place, but to order them chronologically instead of by which FTA (or other leaked batch) they were from. So that's what I've done. I've made sure all of these tracks have not been released officially, were not fillers or bonus discs associated with any LivePhish / Dry Goods release, are not already available in full-show SBD form on etree, and are the highest bit-rate versions available. All tracks have been ID-tagged and will be in the correct chronological order when you drop then into iTunes or any other program. Each file is embedded with a comment that tells you which FTA (or other location) the file came from." - Kenny Powers of

Page Tastes Like Monk

Saturday, I briefly mentioned Page's playing being influenced by Thelonious Monk. One thing that Monk had going for him -- he didn't have to keep up with Trey!

Anyway, here's a bit of Page's solo during Taste (clip from Phish's Walnut Creek DVD)...

Christina Aguilera Flubbed the National Anthem at the Super Bowl

Lyric flub!

It happened to Jerry during Franklin's Tower and Trey during Cavern. Well, the latest lyrics gaffe belonged to Christina Aguilera when she performed the National Anthem before the Super Bowl.

H/T to Hyper Vocal for the video.

Oh, and I recorded a quick podcast (clocked in at 4:20 seriously) with my girlfriend about the Super Bowl. We were going to bet on how long it took Aguilera to sing the anthem. Listen to our podcast here...

Video: Scandi Blue Monk

Thelonious Monk is one of my favorite jazz piano players. Sometimes, I often refer to Monk in my Phishy recaps, specifically when describing some of Page's solos when he's pecking away (with lots of space in between) like Monk.

Here's a performance recorded in Olso, Norway circa 1966. I love Monk's hat, his trademark over the years.

Documentary: Born Fighters

I got an email from Matt explaining the backstory...
If you are even a casual fan of the 70s new wave, you must watch this!

It's 1978. Nick Lowe has maintained a busy diary, producing sessions for Elvis Costello and The Pretenders, among many others, touring tirelessly with Rockpile etc... In December, he decamped to Eden Studios in London to record his second album 'Labour of Lust.' And a camera crew captured the whole thing!

The result is 'Born Fighters,' a fascinating look inside the sessions for not one but two classic albums (more on that in a minute). Screened only once on Granada Television in the UK, the film was thought lost to the bin of history, but some enterprising soul has uploaded it to Youtube and you can watch the whole thing!

An unlikely approach was taken with these sessions. Lowe recorded 'Labour of Lust' in tandem with Dave Edmunds' album 'Repeat When Necessary,' with backing from their Rockpile bandmates Terry Williams (drums) and Billy Bremner (guitar, vocals) on both. An incredible cavalcade of friends and collaborators stopped by too: Graham Parker! Huey Lewis! Phil Lynott! Albert Lee! See if you can spot them all.

On March 15, 2011, Yep Roc will reissue 'Labour of Lust' on vinyl, cd and - for the first time - digitally. Unconscionably, the album has been out of print for over 20 years.

Check it out.
Thanks and indeed, check it out...
