Ricky Gervais' Desert Island Discs

If I had to be stuck on a desert island with someone, I'd certainly consider Ricky Gervais. The Office is one of the most brilliant shows ever and Extras is also high quality funny stuff. Now, if Ricky brought his Desert Island Disc and we had Hugo's everlasting CD player, I may have to bury Ricky's cd in the sand after a few weeks and ask him to tell me more stories. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of most of the artists he included, but I would have to forgo love songs when stuck on a desert island with Ricky Gervais. But then again, that wasn't part of the rules when he made his list, and hell, perhaps we'd find love.... I think I'm getting off track.

He just released a podcast where he gives a good interview listing his Desert Island Disc songs, talks about growing up in Reading, UK, and his journey to current stardom. His humility and loathing of celebrity culture is admirable.

Evidently the songs were not cleared so the interview lacks some of the punch it should. Fear not. BTreotch loves mixes so much that I put them together to see how'd they jive.

If You See Her Say Hello - Bob Dylan
Lilywhite - Cat Stevens
Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols
After The Gold Rush - Neil Young
Bones - Radiohead
Letter to Hermione - David Bowie
Galveston - Jimmy Webb
You Were Always On My Mind - Willie Nelson

Greyboy All-Stars NYE

This is how I spent my New Year's Eve- funkin' it up with Greyboy. I don't have the setlist for this show. And I really don't have much of a review of this show- other than it was a fun funky party - I was gettin' down. All I know is that sometime after midnight Karl sings about chitlin's.

When you don't know that a song is a Ween song it puts things in a different context...I kept on thinking "is this for real? this is awful." My buddy Pat does a great "serious" version of this that we know it is a Ween song we kind of like it. Anyway, check out some live Ween...

It Came from 2007- The Mixes

I found these mixes on the web last week and I have been listening to them non-stop. I know BTreotch loves them too as I am beating him to posting this. I wish that I could take credit for them - I cannot - a guy with a really good ear named Justin G. put them together. Here is what he has to say about them:
"This is my end-of-year summary mix of songs released in 2007 that I always make for my friends. I try to make sure all the song volumes are roughly the same and each track starts and ends smoothly. These are 256kbps mp3 files tagged properly for iTunes with album art already embedded."

I think they are brilliant. Each disc has its own vibe and flows easily. I have been listening a lot to disc 2 lately which seems to be the funk disc. I like all of them- I have been turned on to some new music as a result. Check them out!

Trey Jailed for Two Days?

Lori W. discovered this article Anastasio Jailed for Missing Session. It appears that Trey missed a counseling session and had to spend two days in the slammer.

According to the article...
"Assistant District Attorney Tony Jordan told the Glens Falls Post-Star that Anastasio, who lives in Richmond, Vt., missed one counseling session and the violation didn't involve a drug test.

Sheriff Roger Leclaire said the musician's two days in jail were uneventful and he spent them in the general population."
And yeah, that's a recycled photo of Trey's original mugshot. I've seen it used on at least two PokerStars avatars.

Jorge Ben - A'frica Brasil (1976)

So, with these great radio and internet DJ spots Radiohead has been doing, Ed O'Brien (the less weird guitarist) has included infectious Jorge Ben songs that equal automatic ass shaking. It was great to hear. I was turned onto Jorge Ben - wiki tells me he changed it to Jorge Ben Jor to avoid royalty confusion with the American guitarist George Benson - when a friend dumped a whole bunch of music onto a DVD for me. A'frica Brasil was an instant stand out - excellent melting pot, polyrhythmic music that causes involuntary fist pumping. The guy has an epic catalog, he's been putting out almost an album a year for five decades.

Have a listen to A'frica Brasil here.

One fun note, check out the song Taj Mahal and see what other song comes to mind. I would always sing the lyrics to the famous tune along with the song with some repugnance, but it was just irresistible. Turns out some famous pseudo rocker who married up had to pay royalties to UNICEF for jacking the melody after Jorge Ben filed a plagiarism lawsuit. fan site of the month is linking to us and Pauly wrote up a little piece about the evolution of this blog...check out the article. Thanks to the editors over there for the attention!

Pearl Jam - Denver '06

I was at these shows. They played with Tom Petty and blew him away. It was kinda weird seeing a show at an arena (Pepsi Center) during the summertime after getting used to going out to Red Rocks all the time and coming back from Bonnaroo a few weeks earlier. I remember that the music was good from Pearl Jam and I wanted them to play longer. I also remember that I drank too much and threw up at a friend's house in the middle of the night. Good times.

Upcoming music in Denver/Boulder STS9>>Big Easy Blowout

This weekend I am going to the X-Games in Aspen, Colorado. I am kind of music-ed out for right now because of the recent Bisco 4 night run, but I will be missing some great performances this weekend in Denver and Boulder. Here are the details:

Sound Tribe Sector 9 - Friday 1/25 and Saturday 1/26 at The Fillmore.
STS9 comes back to Colorado after their great New Year's Run. They always put on a good show at the Fillmore- I think it is one of their favorite places to play. To get ready, check out their show from 12/31/07.

At the same time as STS9 on Friday night Boulder, and I guess it could be considered an after-party for STS9 on Saturday though it is not officially, Page McConnell is bringing some Mardi Gras funk to the Boulder Theater and dirty Denver hippie mafia hangout Cervantes. It has been mentioned here before, but here are some more details:

Big Easy Blowout featuring Page McConnell of Phish
January 25 at Boulder Theatre - Boulder, CO - doors at 7:30PM - Tickets @ $25
Featuring: Page McConnell, Russell Batiste, Papa Mali, Reed Mathis and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux

January 26 at Cervantes - Denver, CO - doors at 9:00PM - Tickets @ $25
Featuring: Page McConnell, Russell Batiste, Papa Mali, Reed Mathis and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux

These shows will be totally different.

Boulder Theater will have Page on a full Grand Piano, will have New Orleans food being catored and a silent auction with festival tickets, Signed Pollock posters, and tons of other great gifts.

Cervantes Masterpiece show will have Page on a B3 Organ and they are going to have Hurricane drink specials, and tons of other huge surprises to help add to the party! This show will also not start until 11:45 and go into the wee hours of the morning.

* 100% of proceeds from this event will be going to The New Orleans Musicians Clinic and The Tipitina's foundation.

In addition, the "official" STS9 After Party is at the Gothic Theater on Sat night with STS9 doing a live PA set w/Richard Devine. And for those that didn't get enough Disco Biscuits last weekend, side project Conspirator will play Friday night post STS9 at Cervantes.

So if you are around, check it out. Should be a fund time in Denver/Boulder once again.

The Trucks - The Trucks (2006)

"What makes you think we can fuck just because you put your tongue in my mouth and you twisted my titties baby?"

Against a fat synth and a little break beat, such poetry leads off the second track from The Trucks self-titled album. An all female electro-punk rock quartet (myspace) hailing from Washington state that formed in 2003 made a really fun, unabashed album released by Clickpop records in 2006. Straddling a musical and lyrical border of ridiculous and heartfelt sincerity - they've got a style and approach that I've never heard. Half the time I want to dance, the other half I'm laughing too hard to dance.

" hate yourself so you try and hate me but you can't hate a girl who looks good dancing.."

" we say, you are in lucks we are the ladies of the trucks and we don't give a fucks when we trippin all you bucks.."

"...i didn't expect to find my tits against the wall and your monotone drone didn't phase me at all
i was kinda dissappointed cause you promised me lunch but all i got was a diddle-bot donkey punch!..."

" you're wanting something traditional, well traditionally my love is conditional on whether or not you get down on your knees, why the fuck won't you go down on me?..."

Radiohead 2008-01-16 London Download

What had to be an instore performance at London’s Rough Trade East record store, turned into a Radiohead gig at 93 Feet East, where the band played ‘In Rainbows’ in full.

The police made the band move to nearby venue 93 Feet East, which has a bigger capacity. But due to the move, Radiohead started over two hours later at 22:20 hrs (UK time) with ‘15 step’. Thom Yorke then probably realized what they got themselves into: ‘What a fucking day!’ and then the band played ‘Bodysnatchers’.

It looked liked the band were going to play ‘In Rainbows’ in full and so Thom already said: ‘Guess what’s next’… The band went on to play ‘Nude’, ‘Arpeggi’, ‘All I Need’, ‘Faust Arp’, ‘Reckoner’, ‘House Of Cards, Jigsaw Falling Into Place’ and ended with ‘Videotape’.

Thom came back for the encore to play ‘Up On The Ladder’, after which the full band joined to play ‘You and Whose Army?’, ‘The National Anthem’, ‘My Iron Lung’ and closed the set with ‘The Bends’.

Bisco Colorado Run Wrap-Up: Denver and Vail

I am resting up today after 4 nights of Bisco and 1 day of skiing and playoff football. It was quite a run. Friday night The Disco Biscuits played Denver and Saturday night they played Vail.

The Denver show was probably my least favorite out of the 4 shows. I was bored the first set of the Denver show- I was excited to hear Voices Insane but thought that the jam out of it went nowhere. They played a couple of my favorite songs in the second set but I thought it lacked flow. I am usually very excited to hear M.E.M.P.H.I.S. (Making easy money, pimpin' ho's in style), but for some reason I thought the placement in the middle of the second set after the loud, fast & nasty Little Betty Boop> Above The Waves did not make any sense. People will disagree with me as some of my friends loved the Denver show, but I was not that into it.

When I woke up Saturday afternoon I did not want to go anywhere...three straight nights of music, partying and little sleep had worn on me. Somehow I rallied and drove up to meet the crew in Breckenridge and drive to the Vail show. The sound was better than I remembered from other shows at Dobson - it is a skating rink that had a floor and stage set up for the concert. The Vail show was probably my second favorite of the run (Boulder being my favorite). Many music nerds will want to talk about the 45+ minute version of I-Man in the second set. Bisco did not stop playing between songs at all both sets; the I-Man and Nughugffer together were over an hour in the second set. I had fun dancing to the jamming and segues at the show, it will be interesting to see if it holds up on tape.

Boulder Theater renamed "Bisco Theater" - Colorado Run Night 2

The Disco Biscuits played at the Boulder Theater for the first time last night. As if to prove a point that they belonged there intead of the smaller Fox Theater, they played a fantastic high energy show. The first set was only 3 songs but it included some inspired jamming by all members. The second set energy of crowd yell-a-longs like Helicopters and coming back to Run Like Hell was fun. Allen Aucoin is proving to me that he is one of the best drummers on the scene these days. I was very impressed with his hi-hat fills and seamless transitions between kit and e-drums. Other drummers are funky; Allen is fast, precise, and he has the confidence now to drive the jams.

GROWN SO UGLY music blog and Mr. Michael Hurley

I came across this sweet music blog while searching for albums by the folk musician Michael Hurley (see pic above). They describe their site as such:

A home for musical gems from the past fifty years, decidedly biased in favor of acoustic instrumentation. From the easily accessible to the challenging listen, quality is the sole requirement for our sharity. We encourage community participation.

Last month, I didn't know squadush about Michael Hurley - just that he had a song on the Deadwood soundtrack. Interesting tidbits from wiki and his own website: he's 66, started making albums in 65', has 21 albums, both the Violent Femmes and Cat Power have covered his songs and he creates the quirky cover art for his albums. Have Moicy seems to be his most highly regarded album; I dunno, I'm still absorbing the few albums I've come across. The GROWN SO UGLY BLOG has quite a few blurbs about him and seems to be great at reposting any uploads they've done in the past. If you're down for some great, simple American folk music check it out (link to GROWN SO UGLY posts about Michael Hurley). Also, though free music is great when checking out new music, I've read at a few different places that when you purchase albums through his website, you (can) get autographed copies.

*P.S. Two comments that are too good not to include in this post:

I don't know if you came across Have Moicy! yet in your quest for Mr. Hurley's music.

Here it is:

It's ridiculously fun and upbeat nonesense!!!!

Michael Hurley is brilliant and crazy and a good friend of ours. For my money, his best record is "Long Journey," the original release that included "Hog of the Forsaken" (the song that ended two episodes of Deadwood). Have Moicy isn't a Hurley release proper (it also included a band made up of the Holy Modal Rounders and Jeffrey Frederick--RIP) but does include some of his best work, including the Slurf Song ("oh a little wishbone, I make a wish for a po-ta-to..."). Enjoy!

Disco Biscuits Colorado Run: Night 1 - Ft. Collins

I had a great time last night at the Aggie Theater on a frigid night in Ft. Collins. Overall, I thought there was a lot of strong guitar playing from Barber. Bass and drums grooved all night, hardly ever stopping. Lots of jamming, it was the kind of show where I would often think "what song is this? did i lose my place?" I have been saying that when you see Bisco 4 nights in a row, one show will be an A+, one will be a C-, and two will be B/B+. I think we saw a B+ last night.

Phish- Hoist Sessions

This is pretty much a mini-documentary of the recording of Hoist. Being the goofy people that Phish are, these scenes are hilarious. I especially love the recoring of Mike singing "Axilla" at the beginning of part 2. As a guitarist I also found it interesting to see Trey recording with different guitars. Check out the links:

Grateful Dead Videos: Franklin's Tower 10-31-80

When I get confused... I listen to the music play.

The Dead played a Halloween show at Radio City Music Hall in NYC in 1980. Here's a glimpse of that night with a juicy and delicious Franklin's Tower.

Phish News: Page Plays Nola Benifit in Colo

Leo + Nola + Colo = Heady Goodness

Just caught this news blurb on
Page will perform as part of the "Big Easy Blowout: a Mardi Gras Benefit Celebration" on January 25 at the Boulder Theatre and January 26 at Cervantes in Denver. All proceeds from the events will benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic and Tipitina's Foundation. In addition to Page, the musical lineup will feature Russell Batiste (Funky Meters, PBS), Papa Mali (Rhythm Council), Big Chief Monk Boudreaux (Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indians) and Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green, JFJO). The two shows will include Mardi Gras decor and activities including silent auctions, raffles, drink specials, food drive, New Orleans themed artwork and more. Euforquestra will support on both shows. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Boulder Theater and Cervantes online.
Hopefully we'll get the Joker to head up there and give us a show review!

A Little Welcoming BTreotch Mix:

Aloha. Thanks to Joker and Pauly for opening the door to the Coventry blog. I'd like to start off by posting this sweet mix - if you were a saucy red head with a nice rack and this was pre 1995, I'd put this on a tape, break off the tabs so you couldn't record over it, label with block print and ask you out to dinner and movie a week later. Hopefully we'd end up back at your place and you would still have the tape in your tape deck. You could play it - I wouldn't be embarrassed, it'd be sorta cute. I'd hope you weren't really thirteen, and that Afrobeat had a disrobing effect on you.

These songs - for one reason or another - left some mark that will always smell of 2007 for me (but not released in 07); it's poorly titled: '2007, but Not.'

For those who like go the extra mile with their video Ipods, you can download album artwork here. If you'd like complete albums by some of these artists, let me know and I'll try to post them.

See this post for my official 'Best of 2007?' mix.

And, cheers from the cozy confines of Palmer Station, Anvers Island, Antarctica.

Jonny Greenwood: Bodysong

Jonny Greenwood, everyone's favorite weirdo guitar/keyboard/analog instrument mad scientist from Radiohead did a movie soundtrack. Curious? I was. Download here.

In other Radiohead news, they announced the cities (but not dates) that they will be touring to this summer...

Los Angeles
New York
San Diego
San Francisco
Santa Barbara
St. Louis
Washington, DC

Radiohead will tour North America in two waves, the first before the European Tour (which begins June 6), and the second taking place sometime after the Euro tour ends (on July 8).

STS9 12/31/07 Webcast Download

from a nice fellow on (sts9 message board) named "beyowka"...

"i watched this live, i ripped and tracked this all myself, for my own personal use. it's NOT perfect by any means mostly due to the limitations of the typical webcast. I buy this stuff when it's for sale, but this one wasn't, at least not yet, and I did not sync this to the official sbd or anything like that, the webcast was free and there is no profit motive here and I asked earlier in this thread ( but no response I think that it is within the spirit of the STS9 taping policy, so i hope i don't get any shit for sharing, but this was just too good to keep to myself.

STS9 NYE 2007 webcast, almost in its entirety (missing Murph at the front, but including setbreaks - almost 4 hours total), tracked out and converted to highest quality ipod video (640x480, 24fps, aac audio); might be a bit heavy, i don't know why, but take a few, take em all, go for it. if you want to convert to lossy format to downsize the files, i'm sure it started lossy, they're lossy now, knock yourself out bottom line I definitely think it's worth your time to check this out."

Ryan Adams- Easy Tiger

I was getting coffee this morning with a gift card at Starbucks and this CD was on the counter next to Radiohead's In Rainbows. I thought that if it is good enough to be next to my morning coffee and Radiohead, then its good enough to share here. Enjoy!

Downloads: James Brown - Live in Paris (1971)

How about some free James Brown?

Download James Brown - Live at the Olympia in Paris (1971).

Several James Brown superfans (including GMoney) told me that the concerts at The Olympia Theatre in Paris in 1971 was one of the greatest James Brown shows of all time. For James Brown fans, that epic night had the same iconic quality like 5-8-77 for Deadheads. I have listened to that show hundreds of times already and it's the closest thing you can get to being at a James Brown concert.

That night was also special because a very young Bootsy Collins was playing bass in James Brown's band. Enjoy!

Here's a video of James Brown from that epic Paris show..
